Are they saying one of the spies committed a murder? We really have to look at this deal closely.

The regime in Cuba is no different than Stalinist governments, we can’t let down Cuban exiles.

We got nothing in return, no religious freedom, freedom of speech. I will take the word of New Jersey Democratic Senator Bob Menendez who was beside himself on how bad this was. I assume he is of Cuban heritage.

It’s funny why nobody ever talks about the thousands of homosexuals massacred by the Castro regime, for a media so-obsessed with gays. Doesn’t fit the narrative I suppose, Obama can do no wrong.

It’s not really true to say the US got nothing out of his deal. It was under the previous situation that the US was getting nothing except blame for keeping the Cuban economy in turmoil. True or not, that is the excuse the Cuban Government was giving the Cuban people. So what does the US get? It gets out of a bad and harmful situation with very little suffering or loss of pride. The US is now posed to influence Cuba in a different and much more effective way through soft power. Americans will now flock to Cuba with money and new ideas and the Cubans will be very open towards them. The Communist Government in Cuba will be forced to compromise with its own people on many levels due to this soft influence brought about by American tourists. Also, in the region as a whole, the US comes across as being willing to compromise and respect those governments with ideological differences. Nations from South and Central America will now have a more favorable view of the US and the US will no longer look like a bully (or a fool) by attempting to force its will against a weaker nation. The Communists in Cuba have much more to lose in this deal than the US. It may not seem like it now, but take another look in 20 years time and you will see a very different situation. I would wager on it!

The Chinese government can be looked at as probably worse than Cuba, but with our open policy with them we have westernized them and made them far more friendly and democratic.

I see no reason Cuba won’t be the same way.

I get that Cuban refugees may harbor hatred, anger or grudges, but that shouldn’t drive our foreign policy.

And what makes you think when we have done prisoner exchanges, that some of the people we have received back have not done the same?
The regime in Cuba is no different than Stalinist governments,
Castro was never in the league of Stalin. You really need to start reading some history. Stalin made Hitler look like junior varsity. Castro wasn’t anything more than a waterboy on that team.
we can’t let down Cuban exiles.
So I take it we have let all the Vietnamese exiles down? The Cuban exiles are of very mixed feelings; some of them feel as I do - that this was decades late in coming.

And what did we get with 50 years? What we did is make a little pi%% ant tin horn Communist dictator into a David against our Goliath, and drove him into the Cuban psyche as a hero and living martyr. And that will last for decades to come.

Take a look at what has happened to China since Nixon went over there; take a look at what has happened in Vietnam economically since we got out of there. Nothing? You need to take the blinders off.

Some of them do, and some don’t. It was interesting listening to NPR as they interviewed Cubans, particularly in Miami - some thought it was long overdue.

And the second generation of those refugees have a whole different bucket of fish to try; they are not out in the street marching against what the government has done; they are worrying about jobs, and health, and a whole host of other issues.

Good thing His Eminence was able to travel to Cuba, it’s ridiculous that some Americans can’t travel there.

Catholic clergy are influential for Democrats only when its for positions they support too and when photo ops and publicity can be gained from it. Catholic clergy miraculously become un-influential when social issues come into play

How right you are.

Most of the people giving interviews were decidedly hostile to the diplomatic thaw. Yurihe Goicoechea, 32, who came to the United States from Cuba at 18, said, *“We do not negotiate with terrorists. Never. At all. *The Cuban government will have more money to oppress the Cuban people. I support the embargo.
I think I agree with our 3 Senators who have a Cuban background and what those out of the Cuban community largely think and that is that this is a bad deal.

Cuban American Senator Robert Menendez (D)
Menendez blasts Obama on Cuba
"President Obama’s actions have vindicated the brutal behavior of the Cuban government,” Menendez said in a news release. “There is no equivalence between an international aid worker and convicted spies who were found guilty of conspiracy to commit espionage against our nation.”
Menendez added, “Trading Mr. Gross for three convicted criminals sets an extremely dangerous precedent. It invites dictatorial and rogue regimes to use Americans serving overseas as bargaining chips.”
Menendez on Obama Cuba deal: 'I think it stinks’
Federal prosecutors in Miami were prepared to indict Raul Castro as the head of a major cocaine smuggling conspiracy in 1993, but the Clinton Administration Justice Department overruled them, current and former Justice Department officials tell ABC News.
The officials say Castro, as Cuban Defense Minister, permitted Colombian drug lords to pay for the use of Cuban waters and airstrips as staging grounds for smuggling runs into the United States in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Cardinal O’Malley writes today in his blog, under the title “A week of encouraging news”:

This week, we were delighted to receive the news that Allan Gross had been released from prison and that the United States and Cuba are on a path towards normalization of diplomatic relations after so many decades of isolationist policy. This is going to have profound changes in the lives of millions of people. We are very pleased that our Holy Father had an important role in these negotiations. It certainly is part of the mission of the Church to promote reconciliation and peace between peoples. We understand that some people are very much in favor of maintaining the embargo, but so many people were suffering because of that. After 54 years, it obviously was not an effective way of forcing a change in government in Cuba. So, now on a new path, hopefully more will be able to be achieved.

He then continues with other encouraging news.

When you think of the President seeing himself as a colleague of Putin, Castro et al., rather than an adversary, things come into clarity.

It is called, among other things, “singing to the Choir” and “playing to the constituency”. One would be truly shocked if they were openly positive about it.

Well, I guess any clarity that can be gained here rather consists in realizing that your thinking is not rooted in reality. 😉

Having watched too much Fox News and read too many right-wing websites lately? 🙂

Don’t watch tv and Carholic.com would be the most right wing website I read.

Just listening to what goes on. Remember the President being caught on a live microphone right before the 2012 election to the Russian VP.“tell Vladimir I’ll be able to do more after the election…” Guess he was right!

Rather than right wing, I actually just love freedom and have a keen eye to situations / people which want to take that away.

Thanks for commenting.

Fox News is a viable news source, not only that, it runs quite a distance ahead of the other networks. I’ve heard before people say things such as Fox News is attacks as that is a way to attack conservatives.

I don’t know if that is true, I saw a list of the most successful satellite channel TV shows, the first two shows were NFL football and then a long list of shows, “Sons of Anarchy” and so on but in this list of shows was the O’Reilly factor, which I rarely watch.

CNN and MSNBC seem to at times, have poor ratings but I don’t mind CNN a whole lot though I do think they sensationalize things like covering the protests, they’ve probably gone overboard on this like they did with that missing plane. MSNBC really suffers from poor ratings, so what a good deal to just attack Fox.

O.k., fair enough.

If this deal turns out to be something good Obama will get the credit. But if it ends in disaster the Catholic Church will get the blame and lose credibility with the public.
