This article from today’s Globe comments on the lack of response by national and local Catholic Democrats to Cardinal O’Malley’s recent statements regarding the Democratic Party’s scandalous pro-abortion platform. The ones who do respond and are quoted in this article are so woefully misinformed about authentic Catholic teaching on abortion…it’s truely maddening and tragic at the same time.

The meaning is that they cannot refute the truth, and so do not reply. Similar approach taken by President Bill Clinton when Mother Teresa met President Clinton and spoke out against abortion (i. e. legalized abortion in the US). Bill Clinton’s reponse was silence.

It’s not just democrats who are silent. I haven’t heard a priest mention abortion in ten years, maybe longer, here in CT. No wonder everybody votes democratic.

But what about republicans? They are useless, too. Who will say, " I vote for republicans because they have limited abortion to just 45 million dead."

I guess it’s a secret: Democrats and republicans are two masks on the same face.

I’ve heard a Priest speak about abortion and say it is wrong. He was the same Priest in our parish who stood up, after the legal determination about the abuse scandal in Los Angeles (which he also spoke about, and condemned Cardinal Mahoney, but that’s another subject, suffice it to say, he’s not a friend of Mahoney anymore!)

That abortion is wrong is regularly discussed in our Parrish, so I don’t understand why it is not elsewhere, what is the problem?

Did anyone actually expect any of these politicians to do anything else but scuttle back under their rocks again? As a lifelong resident of Boston, I can tell you that this is nothing but “politics as usual” for us. The people here for the most part are knee-jerk liberals, they just keep voting the same party in, year in and year out, and they don’t care what the senators, etc, do in their private or public lives that is scandalous or illegal. They all claim to be Catholic, but then vote for abortion, euthanasia, gay marriage, whatever the PC police tell them to do. Everyone here is so afraid of speaking out because the ultra-liberal media in Boston will slam them viciously. It is not easy being a traditional Catholic and a conservative Republican or conservative Democrat here in Boston, but we have to let our voices be heard!

Of course they are silent. They know that the message will not be carried down to the parishes and most Catholic democrats will continue to support them and keep them in office through blind obedience to the party!

As a fellow resident of liberal Massachusetts, I couldn’t agree with you more. It’s pretty scary in this state.

What exactly would you expect them to say? The Church and its functionaries has the right to speak out on whatever topics they choose. The laity will take what the Church says and use it as one more issue of consideration when voting. It’s not like this is a new teaching of the Church. The Catholic church has been against abortion since before Roe v. Wade.

They can only be silent. They are not really Catholic now are they, if they favor abortion? I believe that makes them Protestant. They are cultural Catholics and I beleive they are all Protestant in their behavior.

I am no longer interested in who is a Democrat or who is a Republican. I will be voting for candidates based on what they actually do. I am not interested in “party loyalty” and I do not despair about the future. Catholics need to vote for the people who will represent them and their beliefs just as those who oppose Christianity will vote for those that represent them and their beliefs.

I encourage you, my brothers and sisters, forget about the polls and investigate the candidates. Select those who follow what the Church has always taught.

God bless,
Ed

I am ardently pro-life. I have generally voted Republican. I am however suprised that Cardinal O’Malley openly condemned the Democrats when we (Republicans) seem to have our own crop of prominant pro-choice “Catholics” such as Arnold Schwarzenager.

I applaud him for suggesting that Catholics should give more substantial weight to this issue than other social justice issues, but I wish he had called out pro-choice “Catholic” Republicans as well as Democrats.

I believe it is high time that the hierchy and the laity in the US get bold about condemning abortion (and contraception while we’re at it) and promoting life-affirming policies.

I will stop now because I don’t think I can continue without violating the rule about discussing Presidential Candidates.

Pax et bonum

from OP article said:
“I don’t recall in my lifetime any leader of the Catholic church making such a bold partisan statement,” said Philip Johnston, a former state Democratic Party chairman who is also Catholic. “I think it’s very regrettable.”

What’s regrettable, Mr. Johnston, is that protecting babies from murder has to be a partisan issue.

But not even all Protestants believe in abortion. In fact, I believe that a large number of Protestants believe abortion is a major sin as well.

Indeed, so if we all voted our consciences, we could change the country, no doubt.

One thing that continues to confuse me. The RC church takes a strong position against, for example, pro-choice and gay marriage. Yet, strong support for both seems to come from Catholic politicians and voters. Does that tell us anything about the weak influence of their faith upon them?
Code:
It appears that the strongest opposition to abortion and gay marriage comes from evangelical Protestants - both clergy and rank-and-file. This, too, is curious in that several major Protestant denominations, especially in the north, are very liberal on such issues - both clergy and rank-and-file.

A perplexing picture. What it suggests is that both Catholics and Protestants are severly split on such sizzling issues.

The pull of Washington power takes precedence over the Church. And they (the Catholic lawmakers) do it with such brazen arrogance.
