Cardinal O'Malley's criticism is met with silence by Democrats

One thing that continues to confuse me. The RC church takes a strong position against, for example, pro-choice and gay marriage. Yet, strong support for both seems to come from Catholic politicians and voters. Does that tell us anything about the weak influence of their faith upon them?

Many Catholics are not practicing Catholics. Many Catholics are cafeteria Catholics who pick and choose the parts of the church they believe in, and then disregard those portions they disagree with.

I suspect that it will take some VERY STRONG action by a bishop or two, in the form of excommunication of some public figures before ANY Catholic takes things seriously. And if a Bishop does take that strong, but needed action, you can bet there will be hell fire and condemnation from the press and from many of the liberal Catholics claiming the Church is wrong.

I am ardently pro-life. I have generally voted Republican. I am however suprised that Cardinal O’Malley openly condemned the Democrats when we (Republicans) seem to have our own crop of prominant pro-choice “Catholics” such as Arnold Schwarzenager.

I applaud him for suggesting that Catholics should give more substantial weight to this issue than other social justice issues, but I wish he had called out pro-choice “Catholic” Republicans as well as Democrats.

I believe it is high time that the hierchy and the laity in the US get bold about condemning abortion (and contraception while we’re at it) and promoting life-affirming policies.

I will stop now because I don’t think I can continue without violating the rule about discussing Presidential Candidates.

Cardinal O’Malley singled out Catholic Democrats because the state of Massachusetts is virtually all Democrat. There are few (about a half dozen) republicans in any political office in Massachusetts. Since he was being interviewed by a Boston paper, for a Massachusetts audience, he spoke primarily to the Democrats who blindly vote the party line in MA.

It’s not just democrats who are silent. I haven’t heard a priest mention abortion in ten years, maybe longer, here in CT. No wonder everybody votes democratic.

But what about republicans? They are useless, too. Who will say, " I vote for republicans because they have limited abortion to just 45 million dead."

I guess it’s a secret: Democrats and republicans are two masks on the same face.

Every bit of progress on limiting abortion from Parental and or informed consent laws, to the mexico city protocol to the ban on partila birth abortion and the born alive act(I could go on and on) has come through the efforts of Republican legislatures. Every single one of the above was fought venhemently by Democrats.

You are of course dead on with the added observation that the DP’s political platform calls for free, unfettered access to abortion by all women of all ages throughout the world and with government support without regard for the life of an unborn child. The RP’s platform does not at least yet maintain abortion “rights” as a thematic policy platform to be advanced while numerous republican politicians do not oppose abortion. But think about that for a moment…a mainstream political party maintaining this hideous practice as a central tenet of its very existence and willing to sell out to radical feminists who advocate this murder in all forms including partial birth abortion. One would objectively think that such a platform by a political party would call for universal outrage and revulsion by Catholics and Bishops as opposed to a softened but an appreciated criticism of this Party by one Bishop. It is almost unimagineable that a political party would do such a thing without regret and without constant and relentless scorn by the American bishops. Perhaps Faithful Citizenship holds the answers

If the Cardinal wanted to make a bold statement then he would publicly excommunicate all pro death (pro choice) politicians (regardless of party affiliation) in his diocese(s) and instruct the parish pastors to forbid communion to them and discipline any priest who disobeyed.

I suggest every Bishop in the US do this in the next six months.

And if a Bishop does take that strong, but needed action, you can bet there will be hell fire and condemnation from the press and from many of the liberal Catholics claiming the Church is wrong.

To hell with the public clamor, it would be a pivotal moment in American history if the Bishops did their job.
