I don’t like to see any news of this Cardinal for I find his story tragic beyond words. Full disclosure: I do not believe he was rightfully convicted and this is the sort of story that has, in the past, in darker days, shaken my belief in God’s active presence in our lives. Those days are thankfully behind me now (at least I pray so) but this is still terrible to think about without being able to do anything about it. Raises too many “why” questions.

It is but a reflection of the greatest injustice of human history.
I only pray that in his solitary cell, he is like a monk and is rapidly approaching the greatest heights of sanctity. That, alone, will make this “acceptable.” I also do not understand why people think juries are fairer. I doubt a judge would’ve convicted based on that solitary testimony, decades old.

As Servant of God Fr. John Hardon, S.J. taught:
“The great Saints desired to suffer for their love of God.”
When we suffer properly - even joyfully - we are most Christ-like.

Alas, I have found I do not suffer joyfully. It is terrible and nearly destroyed my faith. I consider the fact that I still believe some sort of miracle, to be honest.

I do not offer these flippantly. No expert, but I know a little about suffering. In my 13th year of constant treatment for three cancers.
I’m very sorry to hear that. I’ll pray for you. Thank you for the links.

Prayer, yes! Thank you!
Feeling sorry? No!
Cancer has become a blessing.
Join your suffering to Christ’s and know that He is in the suffering with you.

Have you ever been to Lourdes? Spirituality
DW and I went to Lourdes in 1985 while be-bopping around the continent. For some unknown reason, we just had to go there. Was not even baptized at the time. She, being Catholic, “suggested” that I cross myself with water from the grotto. I did, and began crying. Coincidentally, a week later we happened to stop in the path of Pope Saint John Paul II’s motorcade and received his apostolic blessing. Had no idea what it all meant. I was in R.C.I.A. the next year. Came into the Church at the Ea…

Wow, po18guy. Will you pray for my family? You seem so very near to God. And I mean that literally. All that suffering! It’s like you are next door to His cross. Thank you for letting it draw you closer to Him! I hope I suffer like that but I am really such a lightweight when it comes to pain.

It is far easier to look like a saint than to feel like one. Nevertheless, it is a joy and privilege to offer prayer for your family.

Cardinal Pell’s conviction was overturned on appeal. As far as I know, he is at the Vatican now.

Wait, what??? Are you serious? Didn’t I read it was upheld by all the judges except one??? Oh, you’ll have made my day if this is true!!! ❤️ I stopped following this story after the appeal failed. Maybe there was a further appeal???

Edit: I just googled. It’s TRUE!!! Praise Jesus. This is just the best news. Cardinal George Pell out of prison after Australia's High Court overturns abuse convictions

Awesome practical thoughts. Reminds me that focusing on quantities and statuses is the way of the world. Working out our salvation and helping others do the same is all that matters.

I take Jesus’ talk about the narrow way as referring to spiritual obesity, as an exhortation not to get pumped up with personal rewards by measuring my state of virtue and holiness. I enjoyed “Consoling the Heart of Jesus” by Michael Gaitley. The focus is on becoming smaller for God.
