Overly simplistic and sweeping generalization by Archbishop Fisher, I thought. Might be true in some instances, but not all. I think there is a desire where many are concerned that if Cardinal Pell has done wrong and is found to have done wrong, then he should face justice like any person and not be spared because of his high profile. There must be no whitewash of serious criminal matters again.
When the scandals were occurring I think that sometimes, and very wrongly and sadly, there was a focus on - and more interest in - avoiding scandal for The Church rather than a deep concern for the victims and these victims (aside from those who committed suicide) must face a lifetime of suffering.
These are truly horrific criminal matters and if justice does not run it’s normal course now and the guilty face justice - and if justice is not seen to be done - then the issues will not be settled and will continue to be matters the public will demand to be settled through continuing media focus. Be that as it may if Cardinal Pell has done no wrong, then I really hope and pray that is the way justice will settle the matter and that the Cardinal will be seen to be innocent.

I think that the Cardinal is innocent of the abuse and cover-up charges.
That said, I can’t agree that he has “done no wrong”, as he has been caught “bearing false witness” in the TV interview.
Part of the concern of his successor is, I think, that in court the lawyers will play tapes of his contradictory statements in order to discredit his testimony up front.
