"SPRINGFIELD — Cardinal Francis George and other Roman Catholic bishops slammed Gov. Pat Quinn on Wednesday for agreeing to present a pro-choice group’s leadership award and rewarding those “supporting the legal right to kill children in their mothers’ wombs.”

The statement from the Catholic Conference of Illinois is the latest chasm between the governor, who is Roman Catholic, and the church, with whom his administration has waged a legal battle over state foster-care services offered by the church. That fight is rooted in the church’s refusal to recognize Illinois’ civil unions law.

The bishops criticized Quinn for agreeing to present an award at a Nov. 17 event in Chicago sponsored by Personal PAC, which donated close to $500,000 to him in cash and in-kind services during the 2010 gubernatorial election.

“We deeply regret the governor’s decision to present this award, which so closely associates him with a political action group whose purpose is contrary to the common good,” the bishops’ statement said. “With this action, Gov. Quinn has gone beyond a political alignment with those supporting the legal right to kill children in their mother’s wombs to rewarding those deemed most successful in this terrible work.” … ."

I don’t have $500,000 to give to whoever wishes to run against him in the future but I will work against Quinn, or any other democratic candidate for Illinois governor. As one who voted Democratic in the last election my vote will not only represent a loss of one vote for the democratic party but a gain of one new vote for the republican party.

I really wish the Cardinal had told Quinn not to present himself for Communion, but I doubt as long as Cardinal George is at the helm, that will happen. Not too long ago I heard him speak of this topic on our local Catholic radio station. He was extremely wishy washy on the subject, and inferred that we have no idea what the state of one’s soul is in when approaching the Eucharist. Never mind the scandal it causes, as long as we do not deny anyone I guess it’s ok with him. I’m sorry but some of our Bishops are just not strong enough.

For those not local, the usual ‘up-is-down, right-is-wrong’ Chicago media spin machine last night on the local news attempted to change the issue and paint the Cardinal as beating up on the RECIPIENT of the award (who is a rape survivor who works in counseling other rape victims).

This is yellow journalism at its worst! The Cardinal was clearly rebuking Quinn for being beholdened to an abortion PR group. Just and deserved. But they trotted this young woman out and gave her a platform to say how terrible it was that the Cardinal was using his position and prominance to bully her…(cue usual nodding anchor with compassionate, concerned facial expression)

Dragging the recipient into it (never mentioned by the Cardinal) is an outrageous media smear attempt against him. I got so mad I didn’t even think to look at which channel it was…

I cancelled my subscription to the Chicago Trib because of their all too frequent smears against the Catholic Church…and TOLD THEM WHY I was cancelling. The good ol’ Chicago spin machine never sleeps.

I am grateful that the Cardinal did put out a statement to rebuke Quinn, but wish he and others would go farther and actually ask them to refrain from receiving the Eucharist because of the ALL TOO PUBLIC scandal they cause. JaMc is correct…until they really start putting their foot down, this will continue unchecked.

And it gets better. Terry Cosgrove, the president and CEO of the aforementioned “pro choice group” (Personal PAC) Quinn was appointed by Governor Quinn, to the Illinois Human Rights Commission.

There was a full page in our bulletin. Last year the USCCB was under so much pressure to clean the CCHD up that they did in fact eliminate 5 different anti Catholic agencies that they gave money to. Well, they eliminated some 5 different agencies, and this year added about 15 more! I know there is another thread about this and I am sort of mixing up threads, but I just find this to be amazing. I guess if you are the head of the Chicago Archdiocese you have to do things the “Chicago Way”?

Innocence will almost no longer be found in children, nor modesty in women.* In this supreme moment of need of the Church, those who should speak will fall silent***.”

It seems to me the governor should be excommunicated, but nobody seems to want to say so.

How right you are Bee, but I guess that doesn’t make this kind of error easier to take! We are indeed living in very special times, which are both exciting and extremely distressing at times. I have to constantly remind myself that God is in control…we need to do what we are able to do, not be afraid to speak out, not be timid about defending the true faith, and then allow the good Lord to take the reigns…AND PRAY!!!
