I will not go point-for-point, the case is clear and obvious. One example: he speaks as a fact the well debunked myth about 98% of Catholic women using contraception. I have no idea why Colbert would not take the opportunity to use his time to actually teach the truth, rather than make jokes. He seems like a reasonably smart guy, it is a shame he is not using his talents to actually teach truth, rather than joke about truths.

It looks to me that by sharing a platform with Colbert, Cardinal Dolan is giving the green light to those who ridicule Catholic teaching on contraception and the Eucharist.

It’s not like we don’t get enough ridicule now. This is a bad idea. It makes the Church look like a joke. Enough people already think that now unfortunately.
 
My attempt to document this event in Dolan’s Wikipedia article has met with much resistance, clearly from people who don’t believe anything positive or encouraging belongs in a serious article like an official of the Catholic Church.

I suspect this has less to do with how folks feel of the way he discusses the Church and more to do with how he discusses politics.

Colbert is not generally favorite of the Right.

Perhaps simply be honest with what one finds unsettling.

OR just ignore Colbert altogether, like I do.
 
I can’t stand Colbert - I find him crude and annoying. My cousin sends me videos of his show all the time, thinking that I’ll find them entertaining because I’m a faithful Catholic. Usually they are just offensive.

I’ve just started deleting the emails from him that have those videos - it’s not worth my time.

The man is an entertainer - not an apologist for the Faith. So don’t expect blood from a stone.

And how much of your opinion of him is related to political issues rather than religious ones?

That’s what this is really all about IMO.

It’s irrelevant to me - I think he is rude and annoying - regardless of what he has to say.

I’m as far right as it gets, personally, if that’s in any way important.

This thread is a good example of how even insiders can misunderstand and misinterpret satire. It’s a common issue with all satire, starting as far back as Horace and Juvenal.

I just read a biography of arch-satirist Evelyn Waugh. A number of member of the english catholic church were very upset with several of his novels. It’s hard to imagine a more hard-core catholic than Waugh at the time. Ultimately, many folks (catholic and noncatholic) didn’t understand the message he was trying to deliver via satire.
