Is it always necessary to look for a political or a hidden motive behind everything that our Church does? At what point do we cease to be Catholic?

Part of being a member of a family is not just biology and adoption. The most important part of being a member of a family is love and trust. If there is an absence of love and trust, if family members always suspect that other members have some scheme up their sleeves or if family members knowing that every human being is different can’t apply this same rule to their own and allow them be different, how does such a unit constitute a family?
Duly noted, JReducation.

The problem as I see it, is that our bishops plainly disagree on some fairly major points and Canon 915 is only one example. I would reasonably ask if the faithful have the right to consistent teaching so they are not confused?

I think the faithful have the right to inspired teaching. The Holy Spirit should be ever present in the hearts and minds of our clergy, giving them the courage to change Canon to reflect the true will of God.

The urge to fetishize and idolize Canon is human, not divine.

I am puzzled as to why it takes so long to appoint a new bishop. Our diocese, Harrisburg, has been without a bishop for several months.
Getysbg:

Sometimes, it is finding the right bishop for the right place and the right fit. I was pleased that Bishop-elect Olsen and Bishop-elect Sis have been appointed to the Diocese of Fort Worth and the Diocese of San Angelo, even though I thought Olsen was a front-runner long before the appointment was made.

I am praying for the Diocese of Harrisburg. I have family there, and I have met some good priests there, like Fr. John Trigilio, Fr. David Hereschko, and Fr. Dwight Schallalane. I’m also praying that your next bishop will either be Auxiliary Bishop Walterschied (who is now in Pittsburgh) or Fr. John Trigilio. Trigilio would make an excellent bishop who will not be afraid to be a leader.

Bishop McFadden was a good priest and a good bishop too. He was a help to a few of my friends from The King’s Men with support for growth in Pennsylvania. I know Bishop McFadden is missed - he died suddenly.

I’m also glad that Bishop Matano was appointed to Rochester (NY), and I’m also praying that a tough bishop will be appointed to the Diocese of Albany (NY) soon. Honestly, my opinion is that Albany has an urgent need for a new shepherd, but I’m not Pope Francis I and I’m not the Papal Nuncio.

A case in point: The Diocese of Portland (Maine) just received their new bishop last week, and Portland (Maine) was vacant for 19 months. The longest current vacancy as of today is the Diocese of Wichita (Kansas).

Merry Christmas to you Getysbg.

Our clergy cannot change the law, only the Roman Pontiff can do so.

Might I be so bold as to suggest “vigilance” as a relevant family value and point out the absence of “complacency” from the list.

I read this very long, depressing, and incriminating article. I had no idea so much was going on back in the 90’s. I did not know Pittsburg had such a long struggle with these issues. Thank you for posting this. Even if it is depressing and discouraging, I would still rather know. What will this Wuerl be “whirling” in Rome, I wonder? The implications of the article do not make me excited to see what will transpire in his new postition.

It is a bit naive, I think, and unrealistic not to acknowledge that many times family members do have schemes up their sleeves. We live, after all, in a world engaged in Spiritual Warfare. The Prince of Darkness is actively engaged in taking all the souls he can take until the end time.

Amen. Only those in utterly blind denial can say that there isn’t further liberalization occuring, from the Vatican downward. When Christian leaders start accommodating same sex “marriage,” abortion, and pro-abortion politicians, etc, they cease to be Christian leaders. God bless Cardinal Burke!
