I am all for increased synodality and decentralization (from an administrative perspective)… this is the model of the ancient Church and will greatly help in our ecumenical efforts with the Orthodox.
I find it interesting that the same people who are constantly decrying Pope Francis also constantly decry synodality, collegiality, and decentralization. It is quite ironic. They want the Pope / Rome to micromanage every aspect of Church life and bring down the iron fist on bishops they don’t like…as long as the Pope isn’t Francis!
The Second Vatican Council called for the establishment of national episcopal conferences in every country / region. This was an important step towards restoring greater collegiality in the Church. Outside of the Eastern Catholic Churches, true regional synods no longer really exist…but the episcopal conferences are a step in that direction.
