As Vatican delegate for the US ordinariate, Cardinal Donald Wuerl has been watching developments in the UK with great interest and he is confident that the establishment of the US ordinariate is imminent this autumn. He welcomed the first Episcopal parish in the US into the Catholic Church at the weekend.

“I am hoping that it will happen in this calendar year that an ordinariate will be announced,” the cardinal said. “There will be a time lag between the Holy See announcing that it intends to establish an ordinariate and the actual date of its implementation but I am still hopeful that, before this year is out, a US ordinariate will be established.

It’s a group of parishes, that functions just like a diocese. The difference is that the (future) ordinariate will cover the entire United States. It will have either a priest or a bishop as Ordinary (almost identical to the bishop of a diocese). There are some subtle differences in canon law between an Ordinariate and a Diocese, but suffice to say that it will be “more or less the same thing” as a diocese except that it has a much broader territory.

In this case, it will be a “diocese” that covers the entire United States, and will encompass all the persons, clergy, and parishes who were former Anglicans who have become Catholic, as well as making it easy (by having a structure in place) for Anglicans to become Catholic. They will keep the Anglican liturgical practices (modified slightly).

At least it seems likely that there will be only one ordinariate for the US in the immediate future. It’s possible that as more Anglicans become Catholic, we might see the country split into 2 or more ordinariates.
