Cardinal Joseph Zen has issued a dramatic warning against a proposed agreement that, he fears, would give the Chinese government control over the Catholic Church.

It’s interesting that the one and only Chinese Cardinal has been cut out of this process. He basically calls out the Holy Father for being naive in regards to communists.
It’s certainly historically normative for Rome to concede part of the episcopal election process to local authorities… but these were always Christian princes and kings not atheistic commmunists.
 
I have been reading about this proposed deal in the news lately, and if it is true, it would be a disastrous deal for the Church in China. It would basically be a complete and total capitulation to the Chinese Government. It would be basically taking the situation now, where the underground Church in China is persecuted by the Government, and in exchange for ending the persecution (at least in theory), the Government controls the appointment of all leaders of the Church in China. This might work well in many other countries of the world, but in communist China, it’s just a bad, bad idea. Cardinal Zen is right to speak out against such a proposed agreement.
 
God bless Cardinal Zen. He has been saying this for a long time now. It is shocking what is happening there.

“Some have said that the negotiations between China and the Vatican have come at the expense of the underground Church. In fact, if the pope grants Beijing the right to appoint bishops, then the entire Church in China will be sacrificed. “For the good of the Church in China” the Church in China will be sacrificed, handing its sacred authority over to an atheistic government.”
 
We live in the age of compromise. Secularists of all stripes have the power over the church.

He knew the communists killed by the government, not the communist governments who killed thousands and hundreds of thousands of people. Just like saint john paul II lived under communism as a young priest.

We should all pray or continue praying for the persecuted in china. They have NO religious freedom.

Cardinal Zen is from Hong Kong where they have always enjoyed religious freedom. But he has been a fierce critic of the communist control of churches for decades, and is also against making deals with them and making their control of the church official. The current development must feel like such a defeat to him.
