I remember about a year ago, there was a lot of mumbling about him being moved from his former position as prefect of the supreme tribunal of the apostolic signatura, where he’d served from 2008-2014. Some people were thinking, “Augh, he’s clearing out Benedict’s people,” and other people were thinking, “Hey, now his duties with the Knights of Malta are pretty symbolic, but he’s still smack-dab in Rome, and his time is freed up for something else.”

Isn’t it pretty notable that Cardinal Burke has been named though?
Quite. It’s a remarkable reversal considering he was only named to the Patron post 10 months ago. Perhaps the Holy Father has sensed that it would be smarter to have +Burke doing something useful in Rome and sought to mollify those who sympathize with +Burke.

I am overjoyed by +++Francis’ visit to America. He has made a convert out of me. His style has grown on me, and now I am proud to call him Holy Father. He is peaceful as a dove and shrewd as a serpent. This appointment is a classy move in a whole series of classy moves.

That is not who the Holy Father is…

That should keep them super busy for a good while. Pope StJPII beatified about 1350 people. Pope Benedict about 900 and so far for Pope Francis, 44 or so.

Go Saints!

Yay! I love Cardinal Burke - such a good and faithful servant of God.

Does this mean he will get to attend the Synod next month?

Overseeing causes for canonization sounds like something which
might bury you under tons of paperwork, but I’m sure the Cardinal
will do a bang-up job.

Hello,

No, he has not been appointed as a “synod father” and this does not change that. And, I wouldn’t say that he is “overseeing” anything. As a “member” of the Congregation, he will take part in important decisions but only as one voice among many (I don’t know how many members there are…my guess would be somewhere around 15).

Why is there are hardly any coverage of this ?
I was stunned when it was such big news (a year or two ago) that his appointment to this or that Congregation (as a member) was allowed to expire. Before then, did anybody really care about the members of the Congregations? No.

But, since that was such a big deal (at least in certain circles), you might think that his appointment would also be noted a bit more widely…

Hi, Dan. Thanks for the info.
Sorry to hear he won’t be at the Synod, though.

I think that when Cardinal Burke spoke out that there is really no need for a synod since no Church dogma would every be changed that Papa probably felt that it would be not useful to have a nay sayer there. It’s quite obvious that our Dear Pope is very well versed at Vatican political intrigue and is not afraid to engage those who do not want the Church to move forward.

Hello,

Cardinal Burke said that when, exactly?
