Personally I think the love of the Church Tax is the root of this particular evil. The German Church is simply too rich for its own good, and courts worldly popularity to avoid losing its income.

I certainly think it would be easier to justify than in the case of Abp Lefebvre. His case was a question of pure obedience. This is not just obedience but orthodoxy.

What a terrible headline. Total click bait. I’m seeing this kind of sensationalism more and more from NCR, and I’m slowly losing respect for them.

It is said over and over in the article that no one in any position of authority to judge so has any fear of schism. The Cardinals who are cited in the article regarding this go into some detail about why there is no reason to fear schism regarding the issues that the German bishops want to study.

And why not let them study these issues? That is what the Church has always done with the issues of its day. When the Church stops studying the issues of the day it turns into a dead Church. Until this stuff is settled by a major council, it should be okay for theologians to explore these issues.

It would be ironic if Pope Francis excommunicated them because they took their cue from him. It seems to me all these Synods that have been called under Pope Francis were just opportunities to advance the liberal agenda that the German Church is promoting.

Maybe it’s some kind of grand entrapment scheme, like by the police trying to conduct a sting for drug dealers or child predators. One can dream, right?

On a serious note, one clearly gets the impression that Pope Francis is egging on the Germans for this kind of stuff, and then he turns around and supposedly complains that they’re going off the rails? Hmm…I wonder why?
