Boston, MA – The Caritas Catholic health care system has been in the news lately for a controversy over a health insurance bid that could have resulted in doing abortions. Massachusetts state officials awarded the bid and now state authorities say it will not do abortions but will refer for them.

But I don’t think we should judge them. They faced a decision to get government money to provide medical care to the poor, but it came with the requirement that they refer for abortions. Anyone who wants an abortion can easily find a place that gives abortion - all they have to do is look in the phone book or on the internet. They decided to remotely co-operate with evil in order to do a greater good.

Almost everyone reading this does the same thing: we accept our paychecks even though a portion is taxed and given to agencies who perform abortions. We could choose to stop working, but we don’t, because we have to choose between two imperfect choices.

Also, this gives the agency or its employees a chance possibly to offer pro-life information to women seeking abortion.

This was my thought exactly. This is like saying you won’t shoot someone but you will ask someone else to do it for you. How is this not being a main character in the evil of murder?

Thirteen of us stood in the cold, in front of Magee-Womans Hospital, today to pray that the hospital would not allow abortions to be done. This hospital was once internationally known for its women and preemie care. Life was its goal not death. Now in one room a woman can be having her baby, the room next to her might hold another woman trying to desperately keep from having a miscarriage and the third room could have a woman that just had an abortion.

I can not understand how those that participate in the abortions can look themselves in the mirror and not see the faces of the babies they helped to murder. I wonder what it takes to sleep at night when you are the one that cleans up after the abortionist? Do they see the images, that we just fleetingly see when someone is holding a sign up, each night when they go to bed?

I have had friends that deliver babies and they will tell you they remember the faces of all their babies (yes they call them their babies).

I would like to amplify my remark here. I want to add that I believe if a person were to knowingly refer someone to a hit-man to murder an adult, that “middle-man” can also be tried for premeditated murder in most states in the USA. I may be wrong, so if I am please let me know.

The “requirement” is completely unacceptable for any Catholic hospital.

Neil, I think you are missing the part where Caritas will PAY for the abortion. How this relates to involuntarily paying taxes I do not know.

It is not merely enough to say, “You don’t need to kill your baby.”

I object to the simple “referral process” because “Info & Referral” are standard services in healthcare and social services. People are PAID to hold those jobs. Here is a medical center that is theoretically Catholic referrinfg women (and girls) for abortions?

It gets worse, folks. It is the Cardinal of the Archdiocese of Boston, Cardinal O’Malley, who has actively argued for this. This is our shepherd in the Boston Archdiocese who is leading this Catholic health system to do this.

A couple of points. Cardinal O’Malley has asked the National Catholic Bioethics Center (John Haas, Father Tad, etc) for their opinion. The NCBC is a solid and committed group of scholars who are faithful to the magisterium. If they say this is bad, the Cardinal will have to demand that Caritas pull out. If he does not, then all bets are off and the culture of life is dead in Boston.
At this point I do not know the nature of the relationship between Centene and Caritas. It is my understanding that Centene will be the entity doing the referring and that no one at Caritas will be involved.
Having said this, the Archdiocese has handled this matter with their customary oafish statements and secrecy. Caritas will not meet with Mass Citizens for LIfe, who respectfully requested a meeting last Friday. Caritas will not answer questions about the relationship with Centene. Caritas will not even disclose who is currently on their board. The disclosures on the Massachusetts Secretary of State’s corporate database website are woefully out of date. Until the NCBC weighs in, I will withhold comment on the substance of the agreement - because again I don’t know what the substance is. But I am very disheartened that the clerical secrecy of the abuse scandal days appears to be back, and that the Archdiocese and the medical care group it sponsors cannot be open and honest with the lay faithful.
