Hello. I have been reading about the Carmelite secular order (OCDS). It says that morning, evening and night prayer should be carried out in dalily life.

I do not really know that much about the Divine Office.

Can anyone recommend a book with morning, evening and possibly night prayer, that is good for a beginner like me?🙂

(I want to start praying the Divine Office, but I don’t know which book to buy)

Start with “Christian Prayer, The Liturgy of the Hours” by Catholic Publishing Co.

This single volume breviary, goes along with the four volume set, for morning and evening prayer. Should you decide to join a OCDS group, you’ll have no problem with the single volume set.

In the Rule of Life for OCDS, which is now called the Constitutions, it mandates that we say morning and evening prayer, daily, but in addition, we do one half hour of mental prayer.

For me, mental prayer goes hand in hand with the LOTH.

Does mental prayer, just mean talking to God, heart to heart?

It means going to the center of your being, and resting in His presence. God dwells within and it is in Him, we direct the intention of our will.

It can begin with words received during Lectio Divina, in Centering Prayer, or just a simple word like “Jesus,” but the focus is always on God’s presence within.

St. Teresa of Avila says, God speaks to us within the depth of our souls. It is here that God speaks to us best and where he transforms us.

However, flipping the pages and knowing the shorthand in the breviary can be overwhelming. I came across this tutorial on the LOTH and I still use it when in doubt, as the instructions in the breviary can be cryptic.

Actually, just as cryptic as the instructions about memorials and feasts, when you can check either St. Joseph’s guide or this guide.

Additionally, you may find this online course helpful.

Update: I have got in contact with some secular Carmelites (OCDS) and I will go to a meeting to see if this is for me.

I went to a Secular Carmelite meeting on Saturday!🙂

One of the Professed Secular Carmelites invited me to a Formation day on the 13 of June.

I feel very happy.

And I am very happy for you, Vanessa. May our Lord and our Lady give you the “muy determinada determinacion” to press on until you reach the Seventh Dwelling Place, also known as the summit of the Ascent of Mount Carmel.

To those who fall, how kind thou art! How good to those who seek!
But what to those who find? Ah, this no tongue nor pen can show;

Is anyone here going to “Boars Hill” in Oxford (England) for the Formation Secular Carmelite day on the 13th of June?

From Vanessa

Anyone know anything about the Secular Institute of Consecrated Life of Carmel for women “The Leaven” - O.Carm branch of Carmel? These women reside in their own homes nowadays.
Every so often I check the internet to see if there is anything new about them or an actual formal website set up, but have been unable to locate anything. They are located mainly in Ireland and the UK according to what I have been able to find out. I did make enquiries of Rosemary Kinman (The Leaven contact person) quite some years back and still have what she sent me on file, which is not really a great deal.

Blessings and regards…Barb:)

Update: I went to the Carmelite Formation day in Boar’s Hill. It was so beautiful.🙂

At the moment I am an aspirant. Please tell me more about formation and what is actually involved.

Thanks.

Are you sure that you’re an aspirant? Or are you a visitor at the community? The former is the first stage of formation in the Order, lasting a year, followed by two years as a novice and then three years as temporarily professed. But regardless of the stage, even after permanent profession, it’s a constant growth in the ways of Carmel: prayer, meditation and contemplation, through the teachings of the Carmelite saints, primarily St. Teresa’s and St. John’s, and of the Church.

I hope that you find a home and a family in Carmel.
