"One of the fiercest gun-control advocates in Congress, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), pounced on the shooting massacre in Tucson Sunday, promising to introduce legislation as soon as Monday targeting the high-capacity ammunition the gunman used.

McCarthy ran for Congress after her husband was gunned down and her son seriously injured in a shooting in 1993 on a Long Island commuter train."

“Pennsylvania Rep. Robert Brady, a Democrat from Philadelphia, told CNN that he also plans to take legislative action. He will introduce a bill that would make it a crime for anyone to use language or symbols that could be seen as threatening or violent against a federal official, including a member of Congress.”

“Crazy” kills more people than guns. How about working on that?

Ban guns, they use knives.

Ban knives, they use clubs.

Keep it up and you’ll have to ban rocks.

Symbolic gesture that will go no where.

Like you said, ban being angry or crazy, and then we’ll discuss this silliness.

It is much easier to restrain and disarm someone holding a knife or club than someone holding a firearm.
That’s the problem though. The crazy person that needs to be restrained will not be holding a knife or a club, he will be holding the gun. And everyone will be running around like they do every shooting whining about how this guy got his hands on a gun.

Meanwhile, the hunter will be left with a lead shot muzzle loader and the gun collector who likes to target practice will be using dart and bb guns.

Anyone here happen to know what happened to Jesse James’ gang when they tried to rob a bank while a hunters’ convention was in town?

Yeah, about what you’d think would happen.

Disarming law-abiding people has been proven not to reduce violent crime rates; in fact it raises them.

Oh Oh, Mommy’s gonna take your gun away! Really, do you think her legislation would stop this lunatic from acquiring a gun. What’s the penalty for possession of a gun/ammo? He shot a congreswomen, for crying out loud…Do you think he’ll be deterred by whatever penalty is proposed in her bill?

This is an emotional response to a tragedy. But, these people are writing legislation that impacts everybody. It needs to be well thought out and the ramifications considered. Whenever we “protect”, we inevitably remove rights and freedoms.

“If guns are outlawed… the only ones who will have guns are outlaws” I saw that at a gun store.

How true.

"Rule one: Never allow a crisis to go to waste, they are opportunities to do big things.”

Obama’s former chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, November 8, 2008

That is simply a remake! The original statement was:

“Cum catapultae proscriptae erat, tum soli proscript catapultas habebunt” 😃

Brady’s bill would be unconstitutional, though I’m sure there are some politicians who have no problem with that. Rhetoric does not kill people, and if anyone believes otherwise, then you consciously or unconsciously support a state where you can be arrested for saying anything critical of anyone in government. Yes, the rhetoric is heating up, and well it should be, but anyone who believes that by saying Governor X’s policies are socialistic and will lead to our financhial ruin, is tantamount to saying “will someone just shoot Governor X” is as deluded as Loughner.

As much as people oppose gun restrictions, it is actually Brady’s bill that is the more dangerous one. Assuming the report is correct that it would ban* “language or symbols that could be seen as threatening”*, if this one got through you could kiss your first amendment rights to free speech goodbye. Nor should anyone take comfort in the fact that it is unconstitutional, inasmuch as nothing is unconstitutional until the Supreme Court says it is and I certainly don’t trust the court to necessarily uphold our rights. I am greatly comforted, however, in that this bill will be considered by the 112th Congress rather than the 111th.

I was waiting for the gun grabbers to come out.

I was listening to C-Span this morning a guy called in and blamed the shooting on Palin, Rush, and Beck—unbelievable!

I see how people who have tragedys due to guns become anti-gun, when them having the gun would have prevented the tragedy.

People are going to shoot you if they know you cannot defend yourself.

I see no reason to believe that Loughner would not have used a knife had he not been able to get a gun.

If a person wants to kill you they will find a way. People don’t need a gun to kill.

I wasn’t aware Cain used a .44 Magnum to kill Abel. Genesis must have been translated wrong.
