I have a problem with casino trips sponsored by local parishes.
The casinos don’t organize trips to churches, do they? Well, there you go. Why are churches organizing trips to casinos?
if you read the entry about gambling at
www.newadvent.org, you will see that gambling was condemned by the Church for centuries.
Then, after the council of Trent, it appears that some theologians pencil-whipped the idea and then gambling was OK.
Now, supposedly, the local Bishop is supposed to rule over what is OK or not. When did you ever hear about a Bishop restricting any gambling, on or off of church property? or, drinking alcohol at summer picnics, etc.?
I think there’s a lot of good social activities that people could engage in, besides the social aspects of the bus trips. And, gambling away money, beyond a minimum, confuses me.
People who “know” say the money raised at at the parish level is essential.
It’s the old “does the end justify the means” idea. Recently, in Matt Abbott’s Renew America newsletter, Fr. John Tragilio posted an essay that a Christian can’t lie, even to save lives. “The end doesn’t justify the means.” So, why does the end justify the means on all this church-sponsored gambling, which, to some extent, is fueled by people’s avarice and greed?
