Cassocks: when was the last time you saw one?

When was the last time that you saw a diocesan priest (in or outside of Mass) or an altar boy wearing one?
 
I vaguely remember seeing a priest at my parish wear one on a couple occasions. That was about 15 years ago.
 
Diocesan? None, for a veeeery long time. 😦

The altar boys in our Parish go about in their cassocks only before and during Mass.

We have three priests in our family and a nun. All are from religious orders and they are never seen out of cassock and habit even when they stay with us on holidays.

My Priest from Poland wears one very often (I am from Australia). This is not standard though.

Late 1960s, our pastor out on his tractor, preparing his garden.

OTOH, I have a young friend who was ordained 3 years ago. He’s originally from Poland and I know he wears a cassock. I haven’t seen him in person since his ordination though.

I rarely even see our priests wearing Roman collars, let alone cassocks. Sometimes it’s embarrassing – particularly when it’s a community function where even the Anglican deacons are wearing their clerical collars.
 
Yesterday for mass I saw about 60 cassocks…(all the seminarians dress in choir for holy mass)
 
I think the last time I saw a cassock was in junior high school, 1976-79; some (not all) of the Christian Brothers wore cassocks. Most wore clerical shirt and cardigan.

I think – but can’t swear – that my parish priest (a Monsignor) back in the 70s wore a cassock. Outside of that - ?? 🤷

As for the religious garb itself: I really don’t know. The Jesuits back in high school all wore Roman collars, and most of the parish priests that I recognized in public wore them. And I’ve never seen a Capuchin without his “cappuccino”! 😃 But I’ve seen clergy in Roman collars all the time, and have no way of knowing if they’re Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Presbyterian, United, etc…unless it’s a woman, then I can safely rule out Catholic. If I know they’re Catholic, I call them “Father”, if not, “Padre”…if a woman, it comes down to “Ma’am”, since I don’t know the etiquette of addressing a woman in clerical garb.

I wonder what to do if I ever run into “Pope” Pius XIII…😃
 
several of the younger priests here wear them, including bishop’s MC, rector of several important churches etc., and the seminarians at times
 
The last time I saw a priest in a cassock was in an airport. Intrigued, I went up to him and asked him what order he was a member of. He told me he was SSPX. :eek: :eek:
 
I saw two priests in cassocks at the end of January on a retreat I was on; one was the leader of the retreat, and the other was visiting for Confession during the retreat, and is a priest at a (former) indult parish. It was nice to see a cassock and surplice… and the TLM priest was pleased that I knew what a cassock and surplice were! 😉
 
All the secular priests I’ve seen wear cassocks except when they go outside the church premises (they’re not allowed by law). Then again, most of the priests aren’t seculars…but they wear their habits.
 
Do military chaplains buy their vestments at the Army Surplice Store?
 
I used to see them all the time–the priests and altar boys at my old parish wore them every Sunday.

Now I go to a parish where the priests wear habits so I don’t see them anymore.
 
A year ago when I wore one.

They were getting really old and particularly nasty, so we replaced them with albs. The cassocks I didn’t mind at all, but I like the albs more for one reason and one reason only - they are MUCH lighter, and thus server’s don’t bake as much under the sanctuary lights. The rest(tradition of using cassocks, any opinion on which looks better, etc) I’m not as concerned about.
 
👍 Our young priest wears them quite often. (Diocesan priest) He’ll be celebrating his two yr anniversary this month. He’s really inspired my eldest son to think of the priesthood.

Our seminaries are growing and are much more “faithful” than they were (following the teachings, etc). Keep praying for those vocations! Its working!!!
 
It wasn’t until last year that I recall ever seeing an altar server in something other than a cassock (I’ve attended churches that, regardless of their gender, have the servers wear cassocks and surplices). To be honest, I didn’t like the way albs looked. Perhaps because I wasn’t used to them.

The two religious order priests at my church wear cassocks sometimes. So the last time I saw one was probably a month or two ago.
