Catastrophic loss of faith

me guess, ChristMyLife - have you had any kind of intervention from your “guardian angel” or the Blessed Mother to help you come back to the faith? I sure haven’t. Nobody really cares that we leave the Church.

Not trying to troll or cause problems, but I’m honestly to the point where if the whole Church just shut down tomorrow and disappeared from the face of the earth, I wouldn’t lose a wink of sleep over it.
I’m more and more convinced daily that the Catholic Church is a purely human institution with nothing supernatural about it.

Yeah, I’m in the same boat too, I can relate”, but then you go on to say, “And let me guess, you haven’t heard from Mary yet, that’s proof that nobody cares.” Seriously? With an attitude like that, I wonder if you’re even fully open to receiving God’s gift of faith. At the very least, don’t take an extra swing at destroying what’s left of somebody else’s.
I understand his frustration.

In recent times I’ve actually felt MUCH more spiritual comfort from reading the books of Job, certain Psalms, Ecclesiastes and Lamentations much more than anything in the NT.

I think it’s good to tell God how angry at him and disappointed and abandoned feeling we are.

I’m not concerned about the Anglican priests. I also wouldn’t be concerned by any middle-aged Catholic man with a wife of long standing and full intent to not remarry if she dies (<— might be tough, I saw a fortysomething deacon quit the discontent when his wife died and he wished to remarry).

It’s the young guys who will be having young wives and young kids that concern me. They would at the very least need some mentoring from older married couple priests. Which we don’t have in abundance. I’ll leave it at that so we don’t disrupt the thread.

Wow. This must have been very painful. I’ve read your previous posts back on 2015 just because I was curious and read how you posted about prayers for others and how Jesus was with you. Now you are a pro choice atheist and 3 Catholics have given you hearts over this post. Yes, it’s a terrible story but in my eyes I feel worse that you left the faith. And I will not heart someone who says God left her. He did not leave you. He didn’t leave Maximilian Kolbe either when he suffered nor did he leave my mother when she suffered. Come back. We need you.
oh yes, I know this post will get tackled, closed, people will form riots but i mean well and was confused to Catholics hearting you being an atheist and pro choice. I don’t know why you stuck on my mind today but I will continue to pray for you as I did this morning, even if you’re offended because God knows I care. You sounded at peace by the way, even through your trials, in your 2015 posts. I really hope you find peace in Christ again.

I “hearted” her because I can tell she is in pain. Also because I appreciate her courage in asking some very difficult questions, especially here.

If a boat’s left in the water, when the current comes it’ll float away

You’re going to need a heavy anchor if you want to make it stay

I don’t know how to get it back, but I know how to stop it leaving

Make sure that your faith in God is more than a feeling

For those who have left, maybe it’s easier to start from scratch than to get back what you had? Maybe you can enrol in RCIA or a similar program for reverts

What do you mean by the term “faith”?

To me, the difference between “Belief”, “Hope”, and “Faith” are as follows:
Belief - to declare what you believe are all the possible outcomes of an event. Such as, “I believe a 1-6 will result from rolling a 1d6 dice.” This is based on what reality has demonstrated as possible for that event.
Hope - the desire for a specific known possible outcome of an event, regardless of how rare. Such as, “I hope a 5 will be the result of a 1d6 dice roll since I bet a 5 will be the result.” It is documented that a 5 is possible in reality for this event, regardless of how rare it is.
Faith - the excuse someone gives for hoping a result of an event will take place, even though reality has not demonstrated that result is even possible. Such as, “I have faith that a 7 will result from a 1d6 dice roll.” Reality has not demonstrate that result is possible at all for that event as of yet.
These definitions are based on how I actually experience people applying these terms. So based on this, Faith is the excuse you use for holding a belief about something when you don’t have a good reason to hold it. If you did, then it would just be “Hope” or “Belief”. Also, based on the definition I provided, you can literally hold any belief about anything on the idea of “Faith”. That is not how you go about creating an internal model of realty that matches reality in the most accurate way.

Can anyone think of any idea that can’t be held on the excuse of Faith?

Based on this, I don’t see why claiming to believe or hope in something based on the excuse of “faith” as a virtue or a claim to be entertained.

As to Faith and Religious - you can be an atheist and religious. Ceremony, cultural tradition, community, shared ethical values, etc. can all be setup through religious organizations without believing in the supernatural of it. Jewish, atheist, and secular communities do this all the time. I’m an atheist and still sing in the local church choir and attend bible studies as well. There’s plenty of support online for people who enjoy the religion without believing in the supernatural: such as The Clergy Project site.

If one is in a state of mortal sin it is a lot easier to drift away and lose faith. Faith is really part supernatural infusion of God’s love and presence. This is only possible to an eminent degree if one is in a state of grace. Go back to the sacraments to get back into a state of grace. If you are not going to mass weekly that is a grave sin if you have no reason that you cannot go. Most Catholics do no know that. No matter how many times you mess up keep going back to confession to root out the sin.

Also listen to “Called to Communion” on EWTN as much as possible; that will strengthen your knowledge of the faith.

Solemn Ash Wednesday greetings, MarthaSO!

I hope all is well in your life.
Just want you to know that I’ve been thinking about you and your little human as well. You remind me a lot of my younger self when I read your posts. And I would never be offended at any prayers I receive. I appreciate that you take your time to think and care about others.

Peace,
MamaJewel

Thank you. I will remember you in my prayers because for some reason God has definitely placed it in my heart to do so. My life has tremendous blessings and lots of pain and uncertainty of the future too. That this world is temporary is a source of comfort while I endure it and try to persevere until the end.

Hello. What is challenging your faith? Did it happen all at once or is it a chipping away?

I think it’s a very good sign that you’re still willing to discuss it.

Hello. Have you tried attending a Traditional Latin Mass? I think that seeing people treat God with deep reverence could bring you many graces.
