There was a Catholic Answers article (I think by Karl Keating) a number of years ago that referenced a book by a female Harvard professor on the issue of the sexual abuse of minors. The citation, as I remember, indicated that the rate of abuse by public school teachers was about 100 times that of priests. I would appreciate it if someone could tell me the name of the book and/or professor.

I’ve heard data similar to this before, not sure the source.
It seems abuse in the public schools never makes the news, but if it’s in the Catholic Church, it’s all newsworthy.
Just my thought.

The Royal Commission into historic sexual abuse in Australia has data for all institutions here. It can be found in their report. It was across prevalent across the board, in all institutions.

It is in the news here, though. Almost nightly we hear about a middle or high school teacher and students. In previous places I lived it was also heavily reported. Not sure why there isn’t a greater outcry from the public when it happens. It sickens me that parents are willing to turn a blind eye to it in the way it seems they do. My guess is that the public schools have compulsory attendance and it benefits families because it is free child care.

I am a public school teacher. Maybe that is why I notice the reports. I also see firsthand how often parents shame their own kids for minor (or even severe!) bullying because it is inconvenient for the parents to have to deal with it. Unfortunately, full out abuse is even more inconvenient for parents to deal with.

Possibly this:
Hofstra University researcher Charol Shakeshaft looked into the problem, and the first thing that came to her mind when Education Week reported on the study were the daily headlines about the Catholic Church.

“[T]hink the Catholic Church has a problem?” she said. “The physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests.”

It is appropriate that the Church would be given special attention around the abuse of minors because God’s Church is called to the highest levels of morality and holiness.

We are supposed to the face of Jesus in the world when we fall short it should be pointed out.
