Holy Cow! 😉 My wife and I were watching a program of “The View” this morning – you know… the show that Barbara Walters started on ABC. I’m not a really big fan of this show, but I appreciate the humor sometimes. This morning (I don’t know if it was a rerun or what) they started bashing the Catholic Church – I was shocked! The worst culprit was a woman my wife identified as Joy Behar. She went on and on about how horrible it was that the Church says homosexuals are evil or that they are sinners (Forgive my lack of quotes or accuracy – this is only how I remember it.) She also condemned the Church by saying that it was sinful that the Church would not allow gay men to become priests – she believed this was because the Church equates being a gay man to being a pedophile. Then it seemed like everyone jumped in on a chance to bash the Catholic Church, Ms. Behar in particular – commenting about how people who interpret certain passages in the Bible too literally are evil or dangerous. I was pretty blown away by how outspoken they were about attacking the Catholic Church! Where was the restraint!? Only one of the co-hosts seemed to be level-headed in her comments (the youngest one that sits on the viewers’ right) – but she was pretty much ignored. Some of these women claim to be Christians… where was their Christian charity I wonder? And Ms. Behar, being the worst of the group… her comments seemed extremely ignorant to me. I mean that as in… she didn’t know what she was talking about, but acted as though she did. The Catholic Church has never said nor will it ever say that homosexuals are “evil.” The Church condemns the sin(s) we human beings commit – not to be hurtful, but for our own good and so we know the truth! Because condemning gay or lesbian sex is unpopular right now does not mean that the Church has the ability to change or reconsider her position. True Christian doctrine does not change with the opinion of the mob, or the swaying inclinations of different cultures. I wrote a letter to Ms. Behar (I’ve never written a letter to anyone on TV or anything like that before!) and urged her to exercise a little more consideration before she attacks something she clearly does not understand. I also suggested that she study and pray for understanding for why the Church teaches what she does… if nothing else, I figure she would not be so quick to level ignorant judgments at the Church! Maybe she will find that “the Church” (she says those words with such hate!) that she feels is persecuting people, is the one Church in the whole world that TRULY accepts and welcomes EVERYONE! And, whether she agrees or disagrees… the Church is her home too.
Please pray for this confused and angry woman!

May the Lord be with you!

Jason - go to the Catholic League’s website. I don’t have the link, I’m sorry. You will find a way to send Ms. Walters an email expressing your disappointment at her obvious bigotry.

I sent mine…I was so outraged…not one member of the media has picked up the fact that the Navajo Nation has refused to recognize same-sex marriages, that ancient Hebrew Tradition or Muslim Law does not recognize homosexual behavior as anything but sinful, but it is the Catholic Catechism that is ridiculed? What is UP with this?

Bigotry is bigotry…and enough is enough.

“They will hate you and thow all sorts of Slanderous things at you because of me”

…exert taken from Jesus when being interviewed by early 0 centry Reporters…

(thats why Hebrew’s, Islam, and the Navajo is not ridiculed)

In Christ

i was watching 2 1/2 Men the other night, it’s a racy show,
lots of sexual content… but, one of the lines really made me
especially angry… the house keeper was asked something,
and retorted “would a Catholic priest make a good babysitter”?

i was upset, but… i realize that in this world, nothing is beyond
being slandered or made fun of… so, i said a prayer, and got
over it…

but, now maybe i’ll send an email… lol

🙂

ok, i sent one…

i guess they get a good many complaints, since on the
feedback page, they have 3 choices…
comment… complaint… request

lol

🙂

I may be wrong, but I believe that Ms. Behar was raised a Catholic and still attends church. Sometimes the worst hostility toward the Church is that of its own members.

Pray for her and for all who would change the Church to suit their desire to be of this world and not in Christ.

Hmm. I thought she was a Jewish convert. I never watch that show anymore. Everytime I did I just got angry. It’s nothing but a liberal gabfest with a bunch of uninformed women.

As I said I could be wrong. I don’t watch the show, as I find it to be boring and trite. I don’t have time for such garbage, but I admit that at one time I did tune in occasionally. I seem to recall Ms. Behar speaking of being Catholic, usually to disparage some Catholic belief and to assure the audience that she doesn’t believe the same.

Right or wrong, the fact that these women feel so confident in their own appeal that they can say what they say and not fear offending the Catholics of their audience is sad to say the least.

What is the e-mail address? I tried to send one to The Catholic League but it wouldn’t go through.

I thought Joyce Behar was Jewish.

Folks, I really appreciate your responses – I sometimes meet with non-committal responses or “shrugs” when I try to tell some of my Catholic friends and family about things like this. It’s very comforting to know that there are a lot of Catholics out there who still identify themselves as Catholic – but don’t separate themselves from the Church when she is being attacked. If Ms. Behar IS a Catholic (as reggie suggested) – it’s disappointing (to say the least) that she would go out of her way to attack her own Church. I have sincerely prayed for her and I hope that she might try to pray for understanding – I believe she is in need.

In response to what LSK said about Barbara Walters… it prompted me to do a little internet research. I found a letter sent from Bill Donohue (Catholic League President) to Barbara Walters – it was about almost the exact same thing as I witnessed on the program this morning! You can find the letter here: catholicleague.org/05press_releases/quarter%203/050928_barbwalters.htm

Why is it acceptable to attack Christian beliefs? Is it done in the name of political correctness or what? I see the point well (brought up originally by LSK in this thread) that other faiths have not been challenged for similar teachings… but the Catholic Church has. At my University, I remember last year there was a big stink about Christmas decorations, planning, and whatnot – but I just saw yesterday a school sponsored event that made me angry!!! Advertised all over the school (in the “spirit” of Halloween) is the notice that a “witch” will be doing palm and tarot card readings in the main cafeteria and social building at the school. The advertisement was clear to say that this was “entertainment” – and did not comment on whether or not the “witch” was charging a fee or donation per reading. But, it made me mad to think that we can’t have anything (even more secular décor) for Christmas… but we can have a witch for Halloween? And you can forget about Easter. What’s the deal? Is it an issue of funding? I mean, does the school just put the breaks on spending any $ towards decorations for anything that might be “too Christian?” Why spend $ advertising for a “witch” to come and do her thing? I say this because I have no proof (yet) that the “witch” (Madame Zormai I think her name is) is on the payroll… but I do know that the school is fully supporting her appearance, setting up a place for her to conduct her “ceremony” with a properly “spooky” atmosphere, and like I said… advertising ALL over the place about the event! In any case… it frustrates me a little. Sorry for venting!

Once again, I appreciate your responses and ask that you do pray for people who attack or condemn what the Church teaches without trying to understand WHY. Also, if you would like to email Joy Behar (like I did) you can find a link to email her here: abc.go.com/daytime/theview/ Thank you for your time and attention.

May the Lord be with you!

Joy Bahar was raised an Italian Catholic and delights in bashing both Catholics and Italians. As an Italian-Ameican raised in a devout Catholic home, I am embarassed by her.

She was a guest speaker at an event given by an organization to which I belonged. She is brash and supports extreme liberal views. Ms. Bahar had a failed career as a third-rate, stand-up comedian, saved only by the View–no scholar there. She says things to grab attention, and what better target than the Church. She is bitter and angry. To my knowledge she is not a Jewish convert, but has lived with a Jewish man (Steve) for many years. On the few occasions I have tuned into the View, I have been outraged. The promo for the View talks about how the show’s panel is made up of women from every walk of life with very different views; this is not at all what it is. These are all women with the same beliefs: those that support the extremes of the secular culture. Every day they influence young women’s minds with their very specific agenda.
I saw the episode fo 2 1/2 men and was shocked. These frontal attacks on the Church are becoming commonplace on TV. I will be writing to the sponsors of these shows. I believe it is the only effective way. We as Catholics buy products. We have a voice.

I believe Joy is a practicing Jew. Her remarks would strike me as funny since homosexuality (for men) is sinful in Judaism.

Go figure…

Peace…

Just stop watching and ask others to do the same.
Burying our heads in the sand isn’t a good idea, while the enemies of the Church are slandering her.
