also…
Don’t forget the fact that we, many Catholics, do not live as good Catholics. That is one of the reasons we get bashed for.
Yep.

Talk about being infected by your own kinds…

Ignorant of the understanding of Catholic faith and doctrine then ?
Nah, I would still think not. I consider myself better educated on the teachings and practices of the CC than most cradle mass every Sunday Catholics and I disagree on many dogmas and teachings of the CC including the primacy of the Roman Pontiff.

Oh, yeah…this “cradle mass every Sunday Catholic” predicts you’re gonna do well here.

So you’re more for self-interpretation of the Bible then?

I don’t agree with you. I think some bashing is ignorance and some is not really bashing but questioning the validity of many practices and beliefs that are not only not founded upon scripture but contrary to scripture. Not all folks that are not in agreement with the authority of Rome are ignorant of Catholic faith and doctrine.
Such a belief is not an excuse to be uncharitable. Lack of charity on all sides is at best absent of virtue, and at times is sinful. One who claims to have all truth should be perfect in charity and that would mean meekness and gentleness of spirit. Bashing on either side indicates a lack of perfection. Needless to say, I am not there yet. 😊

Better educated? How so? You just called Jesus’ teaching on Papal successsion dogma. I thought Jesus spoke of Divine Principles?

Are you kidding! It is so much easier to be a Protestant.
  1. I said a prayer and now I am saved.
  2. I don’t have to go to confession ever.
  3. I don’t have to go to church every Sunday.
  4. I don’t have to waste my money for big celebrations for Baptism,Holy Communion, and Confirmation.
  5. I don’t have to learn the Rosary.
  6. I don’t have to bend my knees.
  7. No midnight Mass
  8. No CCd every wednesday
  9. I don’t have to learn about the saints or pray to them.
  10. I don’t have to worry about dropping the Body and Blood of Jesus every Sunday.
  11. I don’t have to marry in the church.
  12. I can leave my spouse whenever I want to.
Yup it is harder to be Catholic. 2000 years of Sacred Tradition and all the blood from the martyred saints on your shoulders. That’s heavy.

They don’t want us to be right. The thought is to scary.

😛 😛 😛 😛
Brilliant…I had never thought of it that way.

In a Protestant forum I joined that is very anti-catholic, one person can post several pages of posts against Catholicism, and… most of what they assert is misunderstandings about the Church and NOT true. So it’s a mix of misunderstanding and refusing to listen.

I agree with FellowChristian about the fact it’s much easier in some parts to be Protestant. Believe in God and you go to heaven–that’s it.

Why do people bash catholics so much ?
i) Ignorance

ii) RCC shooting itself in the foot (giving ammo) with gay Priests, Pedophile and Pederast Priests.

iii) Appearance of supstitious idolatry to Western eyes when they see Catholics parading statues around and attaching money to them, calling Mary Co Redemptrix and so on.

iv) People like Baptists who are well versed in scripture meet RC’s who could not defend their faith out of a wet paper bag (don’t know scripture and don’t know why the Church teaches what it does).

It is sad. I have never disliked the RC and in fact registered through a Catholic College and went to Mass in the morning. Beautiful acapella singing. But I had Protestant friends who were ignorant about the Rc faith. One of the worst things to happen was all of the Priest and Bishop scandals. Now even Catholics I know joke about gay and Pedophile/Pederast Priests and this is GROSSLY unfair to the great number of dedicated RC clergy and WOEFULLY ignorant of the number of Protestants in the same boat (homsexual affairs, child molestation, etc).

I hope Benedict reforms the church and returns it to a traditional stance and hardline against abuse and so on. Benedicts step to the right is a step in the right direction. :tiphat: Traditional RC values, worship, morality and so on. He needs to crack down on annulments (I think that is already happening) and politicans who support abortion against RC teaching.

And yet, you’re not Catholic. Not that I don’t agree with you in most of what you say, but I’ve always wondered about people who give good advice from outside. Why don’t you get into the boat and grab an oar?

I think they have a desperate need to justify their schismatic stance. If you stand apart from the one true Church, you have to be fairly vehement about your opposition, don’t you think?
That would assume they know they are schismatics and separated from the One True Church. In my experience, they do not. They are well-meaning people who are sincerely deceived and misinformed.

Jesus never taught anything on Papal authority. This is all your magisterium’s supposed interpretation of scripture which you buy into, not me. Was Peter a pope?? Was he carried into the Vatican Masses by Vatican guards upon a chariot?? Was he surrounded by more wealth than anywhere else on planet earth?? The answer is a resounding no. Believe what you want. Scripture still reigns supreme and always should if you call yourself a Christian.

So you’re more for self-interpretation of the Bible then?
What does scripture say in 1 Timothy about the word of God?? I think it clearly speaks to one reading scripture for him/herself and trusting the holy spirit in guidance.

1 Cor 11:2
Now I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you.

2 Thess 2:15
So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us

I agree 100%. I think that the discussion would begin where those traditions spoken of are actually being upheld in the CC.

If we cannot uphold the traditions of the CC, then whose can we hold? Reverend so-and-so? You, or I? Without the authority of the Church we are left with our own.

Which is the riskier, do you think? Relying on the Church to teach us the way to go, or relying on ourselves or some guy in his fallen human nature?

In what way can I go wrong, following the Church? Those that do achieve great heights of holiness and perform signs and wonders.
Look at what the Cure D’Ars did. Margaret of Castello was a beggar, and she performed signs and wonders. Her 800-year old body is still incorrupt. I think God is telling us something there. But, hey, prejudices are very hard to erase.

I guess it comes right down to whether you believe that the CC is right in all that it teaches and does or you believe that it can be flawed and that God’s holy word is the only place where true unblemished truth is spoken. It’s your salvation, you decide.
