Catholic Bishop Bars NY Legislators from Parish and School Events

(CNSNews.com) – In response to passage of a same-sex marriage law in New York, the Catholic bishop for the diocese of Brooklyn, Nicholas DiMarzio, has asked all Catholic schools to reject any honors bestowed on them by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and lawmakers who voted for the bill. The bishop has also asked all pastors and school principals to not invite any of the pro-gay marriage lawmakers “to speak or be present at any parish or school celebration.”
The Marriage Equality Act, which was vigorously promoted by Cuomo, passed in the New York Senate (33-29) on June 24. Cuomo, who is Catholic, signed the legislation into law that night.
In a statement also issued that night, Bishop DiMarzio said, “Republicans and Democrats alike succumbed to powerful political elites and have passed legislation that will undermine our families and as a consequence, our society. With this vote, Governor Cuomo has opened a new front in the culture wars that are tearing at the fabric of our nation.”
“In light of these disturbing developments and in protest for this decision, I have asked all Catholic schools to refuse any distinction or honors bestowed upon them this year by the governor or any member of the legislature who voted to support this legislation,” said Bp. DiMarzio in the statement. “Furthermore, I have asked all pastors and principals to not invite any state legislator to speak or be present at any parish or school celebration.”

About time the Bishops start speaking up

Good! It’s about time for the Christian church, of whatever stripe, to start standing up to this nonsense. Deny these apostates the Eucharist and refuse them the oppourtunity to spread their antiChristian messages at any church function.

We are going to wind up like the churches in Finland (as an example) where the churches cannot give a state approved marriage UNLESS they agree to marry gays as well. The church is limited to church approved marriages which have no juridical effect in the country. We are headed for that here in America.

My presumption is that The Church couldn’t care less about not being able to have the priest sign a civil certificate after a sacramental marriage ceremony. I’ve heard that it’s really just a convenience thing for the couple, and not part of the ceremony at all. At best, it’s an inconvenience for the couple to have to follow up with a civil marriage through the JP in town. Some may gripe about that, but as you alluded to in your first paragraph, this inconvenience is far eclipsed by the gravity of the redefinition of marriage in our country.

i believe it necessary because first it will show legistlatures that Catholics do believe what they preach and it will give legistlatures time to think over their decisions.If they were allowed in they may get the impression that the Church is really serious and you can straddle the fence and that its not that bad.Our children shouldn’t be congratulating people who offend God’s laws.
