Actually, there is no question that the SSPX Bishops are, in fact, validly ordained Bishops. However, their ordination was illicit. As such, they are suspended, i.e., they have no Sees, cannot licitly (but can validly) ordain other priests or consecrate other Bishops, will not be elevated to Cardinals, will not serve in the Holy See administration, etc.

So, they are every bit as much Bishops as the Pope himself. They are just suspended from performing their functions as such, until the whole SSPX situation gets straightened out.

They are NOT CATHOLIC BISHOPS and as such are not recognized within the Catholic Church hierarchy, they are Bishops of the Society of St. Pius X .

According to the Pope: " The doctrinal questions obviously remain and until they are clarified the Society has no **canonical status **in the Church and its ministers cannot legitimately exercise any ministry."

There’s a big difference between “no canonical status and inability to exercise any ministry” and “not a Catholic Bishop.” What the Pope says is that they are not supposed to act as Bishops - i.e., they have no Sees, can’t licitly ordain Priests or consecrate Bishops, etc. That doesn’t mean they aren’t Catholic Bishops.

Just because you shouldn’t do something, doesn’t mean you can’t. For example, I shouldn’t heave a brick through my neighbour’s window, as there are law against vandalism. However, if I pick up a brick and throw it at my neighbour’s window, the window breaks nonethess, regardless of the fact that the act was illegal (“illicit”). The legality of the act does not change the result.

The consecrations are the same thing - Abp. Lefebvre may have consecrated the Bishops without permission, making it an illicit act, but all of the conditions for a valid consecration were met. As such, they are Bishops in every sense - they are simply acting illicitly by continuing to operate as Bishops.

Are you aware that highly educated Catholic clergy attest that the SSPX Bishops are indeed Catholic Bishops?

I think we’re having a discrepancy based on acting vs. being. Holy Orders imparts an indellible mark on the soul. If someone is ordained a bishop, they are, in their very being, a bishop. It doesn’t matter if they weren’t supposed to be ordained. It doesn’t matter if they’re schismatic. It doesn’t matter if they’re a flaming heretic. If they validly received the Sacrament, they are a bishop.

Of course, that doesn’t mean they have the authority to act as a bishop. That’s where canonical status comes into play.
