Catholic Bishop, Pro-Life Congressmen Criticize Notre Dame

South Bend, IN – The University of Notre Dame is coming under further criticism for having pro-abortion President Barack Obama give its May commencement speech and bestowing on him an honorary degree. Bishop Thomas Olmsted of Phoenix is criticizing the UND president as are pro-life members of Congress.

Thank Bishop Olmstead and all prolife congressmen who have backbones. God bless them for going on record. I really believe that we are finally witnessing people speaking out in favor of upholding higher standards of morals than we have seen in years past. We have allowed morality and decency to slip so far, that people who speak out are considered as outrageous and unbending. Instead, we are living the gospel message. I hope something happens to turn Obama from making the Notre Dame commencement a media circus as a result of his controversial decision to accept this colleges invitation.

I have a different opinion from most people: As a Catholic I am not so much concerned about Obama as I am about Catholics who would consider inviting him to a “Catholic” venue to speak.
In other words, I would like to see all those in Notre Dame who promoted Obama’s visit be forced out of the university; their thinking is incompatible with Catholic teaching. His invitation is simply a symptom of a much deeper problem in the hierarchy of Notre Dame.

Now, as a political animal I might say something quite different about Obama, but my concern as a Catholic is for unity with Rome, with orthodoxy, and with strengthening the Catholic voice through agreement of basic ideas.
