More gleeful ‘gotchas’ from the drive-bys. It’s all aimed at scolding the Church for its ‘demands’ of celibacy.
 
This Bishop served relatively close to where I am, and it is sad to see more ammunition given to the Catholic-bashers, who have already begun.
 
Can anyone who is from his area and knows this Bishop provide us some insight on his character?

He’s a sinner, just like the rest of us. I pray for him, for his family, for the Archidiocese, and for all sinners everywhere, that they may find peace with God.
 
I do live relatively close to Bishop Zavala’s former area, the San Gabriel Valley. I’ve never heard a whiff of any scandal from there, or anywhere in the Archdiocese, for that matter, since they brought in Archbishop Gomez. Well, this too shall pass.

I inadvertently started an identical thread, which our moderators can delete since this one is already well underway.
 
I think it’s so insulting to men that apparently if men aren’t allowed to have sex they’ll rape women, children and especially little boys. It baffles me that people EVER make this an argument but there they are, in those comments, making just that argument.

People disgust me sometimes but even I recognize that celibacy will not make an otherwise moral man into a monster.
 
Priests and bishops are no different from rest of us- we all sin. I wonder what Zavala is going to do now.

You’re speechless? Not if you were born say before 1953, meaning before Vatican II. I know my history and am not naive enough to believe things like this did not go on prior to Vatican II, but having a foot in both worlds so to speak I see the continued moral decline of Catholicism in the west. My experience was this, as a Catholic public school child I went to “Sunday” School, then when I was confirmed we went to, what they now call CCD on Wednesday evenings. Before Vatican II we learned our Catechism (the Fatih) and the doctrine/dogma of the Church. After Vatican II we learned Social Justice and how to pray for street organizers (I specifically remember the lay teacher going on and on about some priest, I think his name was Groppi, in Milwaukee.) The Catechism was thrown out the door with the rest of Faith teachings.

So this is the flotsam and jetsam of Vatican II. Yes, the windows were thrown open, but that is not fresh air we smell. 🤷

This is shocking news.

Bishop Zavala confirmed me this past May, and I remember his homily about being involved in the Church and to consider vocations to religious life. I don’t know if I’m hurt so much by this. It doesn’t shake my faith at all. However, it gives me some pause as to what he said. Is my confirmation not valid? I’m sure it is.

According to Catholic-Hierearchy, Cardinal Mahony consecrated him as auxiliary back in 1994. If the archdiocese is concerning themselves with payment of college costs, it’s likely that this affair would have been going on at the time of his consecration. It is amazing that he would have been able to keep this a secret for so long. One’s got to ask how Cardinal Mahony would NOT have known about this regarding one of his closest collaborators.

Regardless, my prayers go out to all involved.

Thanks be to God for holy bishops like Archbishop Gomez!

Your confirmation is valid. No worries there. The sacrament is not damaged because the bishop is unreliable. 🙂

Sorry I was born in 1991? 🤷

It is scary. The first thing that came to my mind was “is he gonna burn in hell?” cuz I remember St. Lucia when she said that she even saw priests? in hell? (Virgin of Fatima message)
