Catholic Bishops Condemn Obama’s Embryonic Stem Cell Research Rules

Washington, DC – Cardinal Justin Rigali, the chairman of the pro-life outreach for the nation’s Catholic bishops is condemning the new guidelines the Obama administration put in place allowing taxpayer funding of embryonic stem cell research.

The rules come after President Barack Obama issued his executive order overturning the protections President Bush put in place.

The National Institutes of Health provide the guidelines for scientists using federal funds to obtain human embryos supposedly left over form fertility clinics and destroy them for scientific research.

Wonderful.

Almost as disappointing as Obama’s decision (which is, sadly, predictable) was his comment a few weeks back that principled moral theology which objects to the destruction of fertilized embryos is nothing more than “politics.” The bishops have a heavy responsibility – not merely to stand up for the unborn, but to stand up for the very principles of moral theological discourse which makes defense of the unborn possible, reasonable, and persuasive. I pray for their success in both of these endeavors.

Peace,
