Baltimore, Nov 11, 2008 / 10:37 pm (CNA).- The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has not yet been able to determine if grants made to ACORN were used for fraudulent voter registration, but has cut off all funding to the community organizing group, Bishop Robert Morin announced on Tuesday.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/catholicnewsagency/dailynews/~4/450268090

Wow, I am sure am glad they acted so quickly now that the ELECTION IS OVER.

It was the election that brought the problem to light, we shouldn’t judge everything based on politcs, for the Glory of God doesn’t rely on the election cycle.🤷 though I’m still depressed over the results, I have faith that God is still in control.

But we still have free will and the bishops have free will. The incorrect application of this free will often results in millions of God’s creations losing thier life. Throwing up our hands and saying it is in God’s hands does not eliminated our (i.e. the Bishops) responsibility to exercise free will to stop the murder of innocents.

ACORN supported a pro-death candidate, the bishops supported ACORN. It is another example of the unprincipled actions of some of our bishops.

I didn’t even know that out money was even going to ACORN from the bishops. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM???

I’m new to this forum, and have been looking into other organizations (not ACORN) funded by CCHD that seem to be at odds with Church teaching.

Should I post that here for discussion, or start another thread? (Just trying to get a feel for the group norms before hijacking a thread.)🙂

They did not go far enough. They should demand all monies be returned immediately.

Nope, I’m not sure a lot of people did. The election is what brought this to light. (I believe) I think maybe just to give them the benefit of the doubt, they were not aware of this either. Once ACORN was uncovered for what they are, the Bishops at least did the right thing. To tell you the truth, I didn’t know about ACORN until it was uncovered in the campaign. (nor that they were donating on such a grand scale:eek: )

I’m not yet convinced that the bishops are doing the right thing. As I dig into this story, it appears that the CCHD funded ACORN (for all these years) because they share a common philosophy.

There is an interesting article that shows the influence that Saul Alinsky had in the founding of the CCHD. The author claims that four out of the five key persons founding the CCHD were influenced by Saul Alinsky (who was still living at the time CCHD originated).

As we dig into the story in Maine, we see that the CCHD continues to fund the Maine People’s Alliance (an organization with objectives similar to ACORN).

I would recommend starting another thread.

Cool your socks, one and all. The question of **fradulent ** voter registration is one that can be pursued with your local registrars and through established challenge systems. It is not fraud until Mickey Mouse or the entire Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders squad vote in an election in which they are not qualified to vote. Voter registration is still a state responsibility, not Federal. To flex your muscles of concern, go to your local registrar’s office and help them in any way you can to determine if ACORN registrations were later used in a fraudulent manner.

Failing that, what’s wrong with voter registration? How many of you stood outside your parish center or church, discretely on the sidewalk, and offered to register qualified potential Catholic voters for the fall elections? If you didn’t, perhaps you should next time around. Off-year elections are coming up. This makes an excellent Young Adult project. In my state it takes a half a day of training and a stack of forms, and you’re off and rolling.

Bravo to the bishops for closing the barn door to money poorly spent, either before or after the horse escaped. Economic times are too perilous to waste our contributions, but we should now fill the gap to make sure that Catholic registrations are on the rise and that the poor and infirm are not neglected.

BTW, there were many many years that the cemeteries of Cook County, Illinois were casting votes for good Catholic candidates under the Daly machine. In 1960 the cemeteries of Cook County carried the election for Jack Kennedy. The throttle can and has worked both ways. Cardinal George is no doubt aware of this.

It was their JOB to know what this money was used for - they’ve been giving money to this gang for 10 YEARS -
Why don’t they just give it to some of the Catholic schools that are closing down for lack of funds?

Somebody at the USCCB is getting PAID A SALARY to know who’s getting this money and what it’s being used for.

as you can see in the posts above - ACORN IS NOT THE ONLY “QUESTIONABLE” Grantee. The entire funding process is questionable - it should be shut down. We should be supporting the CATHOLIC ORGANIZATIONS who feed the poor and clothe the naked. and YES those organizations DO register people to vote.

The fund needs to be overhauled or STOPPED. If they are going to give $$ to organizations in direct opposition and goal of catholic teachings, they shouldn’t be given donations. I will not be donating anything this week to make sure my $$ don’t go to this organization.

The catholic laity have been given a load of goods for the last 40 years, with the bishops and priests saying one thing, doing another. This is one more example. Preaching from the altar about being pro-life and then giving money to organizations that support abortion. No wonder we can’t end this thing, the church is funding the opposition.

The bishops need to clean up their acts and walk the walk when they talk the talk.
