This is the last link of the story at the recent bishop’s conference in San Antonio.

Interesting that the initial stated purpose was to approve the latest translation of the Mass from Latin into English. The final story instead focused on their “social justice” concerns; immigration reform and the avoidance of evangelizing Jews.

Interesting that there was no time to address the issues surrounding the Notre Dame controversy. Neither the immigration reforms or evangelizing Jews were mentioned as concerns that would be addressed in the initial press releases. 😦

Regarding immigration reform…
Obama said Friday that he backs reform, including a path to citizenship for immigrants, but he also pushed for stronger border security and said undocumented residents must learn English, pay penalties, and “go to the back of the line behind those who played by the rules.”
It sounds much like the Bush immigration reform that failed to get congressional support. I am glad that Obama is taking the same approach, as it is best for the country. I hope it also includes a guest worker program with rules/requirements for the employers of guest workers (temporary housing and medical care included).

Silly me. I should have known that the USCCB wouldn’t let their conference end without a strong statement about the Notre Dame Controversy. Here it is:

"The bishops of the United States express our appreciation and support for our brother bishop, the Most Reverend John D’Arcy. We affirm his pastoral concern for Notre Dame University, his solicitude for its Catholic identity, and his loving care for all those the Lord has given him to sanctify, to teach and to shepherd.

Wow! For the Bishops, I guess that is supposed to be a thunderous rebuke of Fr. Jenkins and Notre Dame (or other “Catholic” Universities that decide to honor other pro-abortion politicians).

See this link to a conference of more than 150 bishops convening in San Antonio today (6/17/2009) with the intention of reviewing the latest English translation of the Mass, to conform more closely to its Latin version.
I’m looking forward to the new translations. I have hesitated in teaching my younger kids (7 and 9) the English version of the Gloria and Creed. The few times that they attend a Mass where they are said in English, they read along in the missalette. As soon as the new translation is propagated, I will have them memorize it.

Some of the translation, like the Order of the Mass, is complete. Here’s the link to the text from the USCCB.

Thanks…I downloaded some pdfs of the Order of the Mass several months ago, so I’ll see if anything has changed since then. 👍

EDIT ADD: Oops…never mind, they are the same ones - Cardinal Arinze’s introductory letter is from June, 2008, which is shortly before I downloaded them. I attended a continuing education conference for catechists at St Francis University last summer, where a priest gave a session about the new translations.

The translation goes through three drafts. There was a “Green Book”, which was the first draft, and a “Grey Book”, which was the second draft with revisions. The final, completed copy is the “White Book”. The Order of the Mass I is the “White Book” version. This is the final copy. Keep in mind that they’re still working on the Order of the Mass II and ALL of the propers for the Mass. They’re still on the “Grey Books” for those, but trying to vote as we speak to approve the “White Book”. In fact, they just took a vote this week on some of it, which did not pass with enough votes, so now it has to go to mail-in votes, since not all bishops were present. Failing that, they will have to meet again later in the year to try and work out the final problems.
