Catholic Bishops' news service 'strikes' again

It seems to me that the Society is standing for orthodoxy and some, including perhaps some U.S. Bishops, don’t like the interference.

Reminds me of a story I heard about Napolean once. * He once told a Cardinal (I’m paraphrasing here but you’ll get the point) “I will destroy your Church”; to which the good Cardinal replied “We haven’t even been able to do it ourselves.”*. The Holy Spirit must be in charge - this type of fighting within the Church would have destroyed a man-led organization a long time ago.

I think that it’s important to note that the Cardinal Newman Society (which claims to be catholic, but which is not under any ecclesiastical authority, but claims to be the “watch dog” for orthodoxy) should not be confused with Newman Centers which are catholic ministries located on college campus’ which are usually under the authority of the local bishop.

The Catholic News Service (CNS) is an offical news organization of the USCCB. And CNS is a copyrighted term for Catholic News Service and not the Cardinal Newman Society.

I found the last paragraph to be very interesting: “Matt Abbott’s note: Between this and the recent Brokeback Mountain movie review debacle, I think it’s time to clean house at Catholic News Service. Of course, that would mean cleaning house at the USCCB, which would require nothing short of an act of God.”
Which would at least indicate that Matt Abbott if not the Cardinal Newman Society as well is not only disloyal but is disrepectful to the bishops of the church which they claim to be loyal to.

Thank you for clarifying this! I am not well acquainted with Newman Centers, and the article had me thinking that they were the same as the Cardinal Newman Society.

That was Napoleon to the Pope at the time. He said “I will destroy your Church”. The pope’s reply: “The Bishops [or maybe it was priests] have been trying to do that for years- they haven’t succeeded and you won’t either”.

Thank you! :tiphat: Can you (and you too, Chickamauga) tell me where you found the quote? I thought I found it once on the CA site, but can’t now.

You meant “trademarked”, not “copyrighted”.

yep, I agree. And yet he would, no doubt, claim to be absolutely and categorically orthodox.
just one example of many on this site of a kind of cynical and holier-than-thou disrespect of the leadership of the Church in America, a leadership put there by the Holy Spirit.

I first heard the quote said by Father Bendict Groeschel on EWTN. I later found it quoted in the article here:

desertvoice.org/ArchiveText/2004/Alti042304.htm

Unfortunately, I’ve haven’t found the quote in a primary account recorded by an eyewitness of the exchange. I don’t doubt something like that was said by Pius VII, it certainly reflects his attitude toward *l’empereur, *by the original source of the quote remains elusive… for the time being.
