Catholic business owners who beat back ObamaCare denied award from Denver

These people won’t be happy until there is no more religion and no more morals.

I have never seen a more bigoted group of people…
 
How petty. I hope this brings Hercules Industries more opportunities and success.

It is a sad commentary, but perhaps more for what it says about perceptions, spin and timing than anything else…

I might be wrong here…but the impression I get from the article is that the politician(s) involved are more concerned over the timing of the proclamation than with it’s merit.
To me this says that - they figure no matter how carefully they word the proclamation, praising the wonderful work and civic spirit of the company, their political foes and media people will spin it around to be some sort of commentary/reward/support for the company’s position on Obamacare…And I have no doubt but that is exactly what would happen, given the timing…

As much as we lament the media bias re: the church - perhaps we can feel some empathy toward some of our public officials who likewise can be unfairly targeted and feel unduly pressured…

…or maybe this is mostly a sad commentary on the state of politics on both sides.

I feel bad for these guys that they missed out on an award based on a stance the Constitution gives them the right to take. But it also seems a little melodramatic to think this issue rises to the historical standard of religious persecution.

It’s at least on the level of treatment Jews got in Medieval Europe as described in The Merchant of Venice, which is considered religious persecution. In any event, it’s the inverse of giving someone the Nobel Prize for doing nothing; or, in the case of Yasser Arafat, something negative.

The treatment Catholics are reciving today does not even come close to the persecution of jews in the middle ages or during the holocaust. My own experience as a Catholic growing up in Northern Ireland in the 1970’s pales in comparison. The cries of persecution are tyring and indeed demeaning.

As a catholic are you being denied to work, own property and/or a business? Are you being denied the right to vote or participate in public office? Are you being denied public services, education or medical care? Are you being denied the right to express your religous beliefs in a public forum (obviously not given we are on this web site). Are you being beaten or murdered in the street, is your property or home being burnt to the ground without recourse to the police or courts? Do I need to go on? I for one am tired of the comparisons. We really have NO idea what persecution is and cries thereof are incredibally niave and in poor taste.
 
Were we actually expecting any other behavior from those that oppose Religion:confused:

  1. This issue is not limited to Catholics.
  2. You might claim oppostion to religion, but it’s hard to claim persecution before it starts.
  3. I’ll be right beside you if anything like our Irish friend’s experience develops, but somehow I’m pretty sure it won’t.

Brief comment on #2…Could you please provide a list of the things that qualify as a “starting point”? It strikes me that it can be tricky to determine just when persecution starts.

I tend to agree with your comment #1…the issue is not limited to Catholics.
Of course the Catholic Church, for several reasons, seems to be a “lightning rod” for the media when it comes to writing news stories.

Whether those shouting “persecution” are doing so too soon - only history will tell…

I wouldn’t consider this persecution but at a minimum it certainly smacks of hostility to this Catholic owned company. You might consider this a starting point that leads to persecution.

There is no accounting for taste.

A real case: A black person I once knew sends a resume to a company. The company replies with an offer to interview him and pay for his travel expenses across country to the interview. He arrives at the company reception and informs the receptionist that he is there to interview for a job. She tells him that they aren’t hiring. Now, black folks would justifiably consider the receptionist to be a racist, but apparently you wouldn’t.

Of course it’s tricky. Look what’s going on here is that religious organizations are being asked to provide health coverage that includes some coverage for abortion and contraception when the employee is working for a non-church (e.g. hospital or university) entity. I don’t expect the Catholic Church to like this, but the reality health insurance is part of a defined benefits package, it’s compensation. What is not religious persecution when that same employee takes part of their paycheck and buys contraception or pays for an abortion? The church is still funding these activates no matter how you look at it.

Let me put this another way; the Catholic Church is allowed to only hire men as Priests because it is a legitimately held belief of the Church, no sex discrimination case will ever be won against this. But to only hire men as doctors, professors, or administrators in hospitals and universities, is not legal. I say this because if the government was forcing a church to have such coverage for employees of an actual congregation, I would be on board for that part. I think that would be over stepping the established legal and customary bounds of religious freedom.

In response to your question, no one here is being prohibited from worshiping, getting a job, moving freely, or getting a house. That’s persecution in my book. What we have here is a disagreement in the 'public square" as JFK would have put it.
 
Yes… Let’s wait till the lions are shipped to the White House… Maybe then…:cool:
