Of course it’s tricky. Look what’s going on here is that religious organizations are being asked to provide health coverage that includes some coverage for abortion and contraception when the employee is working for a non-church (e.g. hospital or university) entity. I don’t expect the Catholic Church to like this, but the reality health insurance is part of a defined benefits package, it’s compensation. What is not religious persecution when that same employee takes part of their paycheck and buys contraception or pays for an abortion? The church is still funding these activates no matter how you look at it.

Let me put this another way; the Catholic Church is allowed to only hire men as Priests because it is a legitimately held belief of the Church, no sex discrimination case will ever be won against this. But to only hire men as doctors, professors, or administrators in hospitals and universities, is not legal. I say this because if the government was forcing a church to have such coverage for employees of an actual congregation, I would be on board for that part. I think that would be over stepping the established legal and customary bounds of religious freedom.

In response to your question, no one here is being prohibited from worshiping, getting a job, moving freely, or getting a house. That’s persecution in my book. What we have here is a disagreement in the 'public square" as JFK would have put it.
This makes more sense than anything I’ve read on this topic.

When do Catholic protest and claim persecution? After it is too late?
To claim a city honorific, a mere piece of paper constitutes oppression in this case or rather the lack thereof is some sort of persecution is absurd as are claims made on so many topics esspecially comparing such supposed persecution as being similar to what the jews have experienced. This buisness is not being shut down its profitability impacted nor any other attack upon the business or its owners is being perpetrated. So tell me where is the persecution.

If this is what you consider persecution, my God! Growing up I faced cerfews, physical assaults by non-catholics (including authorities), my father was twice “picked up” and detained without cause (internment without trial)- being catholic seemed to be a crime in itself. I could go on but even this is nothing in comparison to what the jews suffered and much more than what catholics in the USA face today!

Be careful about crying “wolf” one day you may find yourself truly persecuted for your beliefs but what you are experiencing now is a far far cry from that.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm… It is not so much as cryng wolf so much as it is ensuring that such extremes do not occurr. It is being Pro - active.

There is no accounting for taste.

A real case: A black person I once knew sends a resume to a company. The company replies with an offer to interview him and pay for his travel expenses across country to the interview. He arrives at the company reception and informs the receptionist that he is there to interview for a job. She tells him that they aren’t hiring. Now, black folks would justifiably consider the receptionist to be a racist, but apparently you wouldn’t.
Yes, and I wonder what the reponse would be if we exchange Catholic for Islam or homosexual as an example? In a society that sees everthing through the prism of equality and political correctness it is hard to defend this as anything but discrimination.

As I said when do Catholics start worrying and speaking up?

Ah! The saintlike patience, the perpetual tolerance, the boundless charity of the bleeding heart left. - I hate you! And you’ll PAY!

It’s the three strikes principle.

You don’t give a religion in your profile - but as Christians we aren’t allowed to hate our enemies…
"You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
Mt 5:43-45

Peace
James

👍 But some are more equal than others. 😉

Hi James. I’m Catholic. Stealth profile. 😉

I don’t hate anyone. :nope: And although your citation is 100 percent true - I haven’t needed that particular counsel to coax me from any lynch mob. 🙂

I DO get annoyed by the hypocrisy of the “love everybody” left - when I see that “everybody” doesn’t include everybody … especially people like me (or the Catholic businessmen here).

The happy/smiley face with the hearts saying “I hate you” amused me and probably those
with my taste (and take on the controversy).

I posted at a time when most of the discussion was serious (and, yes, the subject IS serious). The aggregate of my post is still serious, but I thought to salt-and-pepper things with a bit of humor.

If my little funny causes someone to jump the rails of sanity and cause harm … I’ll feel bad about it. I might not go so far as to admit sin in my post.

**But on a serious note - “HATE is BAD!” ** I heartily agree with you *(and Jesus come to think of it - you are in good company there James). I mean - WE are. 😊 *

It may be no bigger than a paper cut on the body of Christ (the action against the Catholic business owners for “political correctness”) - and maybe THEY should (or did) “turn the other cheek”.

But pardon some of us (maybe you too James, I don’t know) from noticing - and not approving of the injustice. And in my case making fun of the hypocrisy, with an eye to shaming those so inclined to keep doing it to pause and think “…we may get made FUN of for this nonsense!”

Aversion therapy is not always the best “first option” in the fight for fairness and justice; but sometimes it’s a tool that can get the job done or augment the more gentle “first options” to complete the task.

You may be another part of the body James, but I’ll bet there’s someone else here who saw my take and either had a chuckle … or took at as … (slight funny coming)

:sad_yes: - yeah, (sigh) I hear ya.

:hmmm: - “Now, WHAT kind of deviltry can I come up with* NEXT .*…” - Bugs Bunny

***(The previous line is not meant for adoption as a legitimate philosophy or to take the place of Jesus Christ - who is the WAY and the TRUTH and the LIFE …) *** and not a cartoon. 😃

It does matter how you look at it.

Once an employee has a paycheck that money is his own,. If he spends it on evil activity (Birth control) than he will be judged.

The Church is not culpable for money that is no longer theirs. If the government forces them through punitive laws to purchase benefits that include sinful activities and if she yields, She is violating the very essence of her mission!

Get on board now, because this is without a doubt persecution. When you are being strong armed to violate your conscience you are being violated at the basic level of free will.

The Church’s true mission is to get everyone to heaven. It can no more tolerate sin than her bridegroom will. This is persecution that strikes at the very identity of the church.

Get on board!
