“Does anyone remember when she tore a picture of the pope during her performance on Saturday Night Live?”

That incident was so shocking and upsetting for the people of SNL that they refuse to let it be seen again-even in all those SNL clip shows that we see on TV.

And when did Harry Connick, Jr convert to Catholicism? He used to be an Evangelical. In fact, if I remember correctly, his father was/is an Evangelical minister.

And I know that technically Martin Sheen is a Catholic, but I hate lumping myself in the same category as someone who stars on The “Left” Wing.

Scout :tiphat:
Harry Connick Jr. has always been Catholic (can’t vouch for whether he practices, but indications seem to point that way.) His Dad was actually D.A. in the New Orleans area for years. An uncle of his is a deacon here at a parish in Mobile AL.

I know stephen colbert is catholic, but is he republican? Im having this debate with friends, and theyre calling me an idiot for thinking that he is a republican, and that his T.V. show facade is just an act.
Colbert Nation and the character he plays on the show are both a satire - he is mocking Bill O’Reilly (or ‘Papa Bear’, as he often refers to him). It is indeed, except for the parts when it gets so ridiculous he cracks up, all a facade. It’s such ridiclous and over the top mockery; I can’t get enough! :clapping:

How come no one mentioned Coach Mike Krzyzewski (sp?) He is from St. Helen Parish in Chicago (even autographed a parish bulletin for my cousin’s kid after Mass one day) and went to Weber HS.

Chris Zorich (played for Notre Dame and the Chicago Bears).

Also, Harry Lennix (“Matrix” and “Commander in Chief”) thought about becoming a priest and graduated from Quigley South in Chicago.

And Kate Mulgrew is also a pro-life advocate.

And, BTW - I hope youse are all seated for this one - Tom Cruise went to a high school seminary from what I hear.

There is far more to practicing Catholicism than just going to Mass on Sunday.
True, there is. But this thread was started as which celebrities/sports figure were known as “Catholic”. The three whom I listed consider themselves to be. Again, it is not up to me to decide who is Catholic and who isn’t. If someone tells me they are, why wouldn’t I believe them? At least they are trying, which is more than many other “former Catholic” celebrities who have totally given up the religion altogether do. We all have sins and none of us are perfect, myself included, but I still consider myself a “Catholic” and I keep trying to be a better one, even when I know I have sinned. JMO. 🙂

I think that if someone is identified as Catholic and it causes scandal or a reaction of “No way! You’ve got to be kidding” then there is something wrong. Two people publicly identified as living together and also as Catholic don’t really help the cause, do they?

If someone leads a public life and proudly self-identifies as Catholic you bet I have a right to comment on them. I have to explain to my kids why Catholics REALLY aren’t like that. They should just be quiet.

Anyone can judge my public life if they’d like… 👍
“Commenting” is one thing, passing judgement is another. Everyone is intitled to his/her own opinion, but in the end, isn’t it up to God to decided who is and who isn’t a good “Catholic”? 🙂

Wow! A two year old thread resurrected!

Someone went digging!
I was Googling celebrities who were known to be Catholics, just for the heck of it and I came across this thread. And I added a few who weren’t on the list. (Acually, I’m glad I came across this. It’s a very interesting and informative site.) 🙂

That’s the same mentality that says we can’t speak up when someone does wrong. Look what it’s lead to.

IMHO, the world needs more judgmentalism, not less!

**I think these people are Catholic, however not sure if they are practicing anymore:

Regis Philbin (from ‘Live w/ Regis and Kelly’)

Jennifer Lopez (married 3 times now, so not sure)

The late singer Salena

Jon Voight (Angelina Jolie’s dad, he may not be practicing either though)**

I’m all for speaking your mind, but I also remember that the Lord said something like, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” Personally, I do not think people should live together, or have children without being married. But, I still don’t think I should judge people who do, even if I don’t agree with their lifestyle. I also don’t believe in pro-choice, but there are Catholics out there who do. I stongly disagree with them, but it’s not up to me to “judge” them. It’s God whom they have to answer to. Again, JMHO. 🙂

Lili, I think there is a different standard for public people and those of us who are not.

If you are a public person, relying on the public to buy something from you (CDs, records, TV shows, movies, you) you are marketing yourself as well as your actual product. When you present your package (talent, morality, quotes, actual product) to me, I have every right to judge you.

Some things are objectively wrong. We can make that determination. If you are a public figure and you proudly proclaim you are Catholic, and at the same time are engage in activities that are objectively wrong, you are fair game. People have to go behind you and correct the perception that the Church believes or condones something it doesn’t.

Chris O’Donnell is a practicing Catholic, he and his wife have 4 kids with another on the way!

Sorry, but I have no intention of paying for a book to answer a question I already know the answer to. You think I’m wrong, I think you’re wrong-so let’s just leave it at that.

Scout :tiphat:
Bono = not raised Catholic. Common knowledge.

edited to add: I did not realize that this was such an old thread

I do get what you’re saying about the celebrities being public figures, and you do have a point. But even so, their relationship with God is personal, regardless of what we the public think of them and how they lead their lives. And for that reason alone, it’s not us they have to please, but Him.

Liligal,

I’m sorry, but you appear to have been duped by the modern-day permissivists. The Bible also states in 1 Cor. 5 (Douay-Rheims, courtesy of www.awmach.org):
It is absolutely heard that there is fornication among you and such fornication as the like is not among the heathens: that one should have his father’s wife.
And you are puffed up and have not rather mourned: that he might be taken away from among you that hath done this deed.
I indeed, absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged, as though I were present, him that hath so done,
In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, you being gathered together and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus:
To deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Your glorying is not good. Know you not that a little leaven corrupteth the whole lump?
Purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new paste, as you are unleavened. For Christ our pasch is sacrificed.
Therefore, let us feast, not with the old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness: but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
I wrote to you in an epistle not to keep company with fornicators.
I mean not with the fornicators of this world or with the covetous or the extortioners or the servers of idols: otherwise you must needs go out of this world.
But now I have written to you, not to keep company, if any man that is named a brother be a fornicator or covetous or a server of idols or a railer or a drunkard or an extortioner: with such a one, not so much as to eat.
For what have I to do to judge them that are without? Do not you judge them that are within?
For them that are without, God will judge. Put away the evil one from among yourselves.
There are instances we are to judge. The Bible is clear on it, and scolds us for not doing something about immorality.

I still go by my quote because it came from Jesus DIRECTLY. We can say what we want about celebrities, but who are we to say that their own personal relationships with God are of any lesser value than our own just because they don’t lead the lives we deem as worthy? And for the record, I don’t think I’ve been “duped” by anyone. I said before, I don’t agree with “living together” or “having kids out of wedlock”, but I won’t condemn somebody else for it, whether they are a celebrity or not.

Well, since this thread was resurrected…
Sheen was his mother’s maiden name. He is Mexican-Irish. Martin Sheen’s last name is Estevez, like his son Emilio.
According to Wikipedia, Martin’s father was from Spain, not Mexico. Also, Sheen is not Martin’s mother’s maiden name and he did take the stage name Sheen in honor of the late bishop.

Even if his politics and activism might seem at odds with Catholic teaching at times the name Sheen still points to orthodox Catholicism. I’ve always thought that taking the name was a neat thing to do.

Oh, Sheen’s orthodox enough (the Church having no specific teaching against expanding the nanny state); he’s just kinda annoying.

The West Wing sucked lemons, though.

His brother plays the best Angel of Death this side of Abarai Renji, I have to add.

So what difference does that make? After all., ALL scripture is the Word of God, right?

Besides, admonishing the sinner is one of the spiritual works of mercy.

Additionally, if you read the context of the whole “let him who is without sin cast the first stone”, it was in the context of a public execution. No one here is talking about taking the fornicating bums outside the city walls and executing them, just “calling them out”, so to speak. After all, as someone pointed out, the general public needs to be set straight so as not to think the Catholic Church approves such public sinning. That is called avoiding scandal, and Jesus had some harsh words about that, too.
