I was struck last Ash Wednesday watching one of my favorite sport shows “Around the Horn”. Here are two of the shows “celebrities”, Tony Reali (show host) and Bill Plaschke (sports writer) with ashes on their foreheads. I can’t recall ever seeing that on any daytime TV show before. 👍
I’ve seen Tony Reali with ashes on his forehead the last few years during Ash Wednesday.

A little about him… he went to a *very highly regarded *all boys private Catholic High School very close to where I grew up in NJ. I’ve been there many times for sports and academic related events/competitions as a kid. It requires an entrance exam and has very high tuition (rivals that of some colleges). The school has a beautiful campus, good education, and an outstanding athletics program. They draw many of the top catholic athletes away from public schools.

Alec Guinness [convert] "Once when Guinness was on a break from filming the Fr. Brown movie in 1954 (in Italy I believe) he was taking a walk (he still had his priest’s costume on) and a young boy came up and held his hand and walked with him a while talking Italian. Guinness thought to himself that if a stranger boy trusted a man in a priest’s habit that much then there must be something to the religion. He converted within a few years.

It still is an oxymoron to be a “Hollywood Catholic”. I think I’d like to write a book about Catholics in Hollywood, about the people who were or claimed to be, the characters they portrayed and Catholic-tone of the movies they were in. One of the key things I look at is their marital status and/or history. Generally, but not always, if the celeb was married only once until ‘death do us part’ then they are more likely to be faithful Catholics, Spencer Tracy is one exception to that rule.

Anne Hathaway says she has no religion because her brother came out a couple of years ago and she says she couldn’t stay in a religion that didn’t accept her brother’s lifestyle.

I haven’t read all the pages…but I dunno if anyone mentioned Dean Koontz? He’s a great author and the author to one of my favorite book series called Odd Thomas… The Church is actually put in a very good light in his books…so refreshing.

Timothy Goebbels (figure skater known as the quad king, won Olympic Silver in SLC). He attends mass several times a week and other skaters know that he is “religious.”

My favorite actor, Robert Patrick (Terminator 2, Ladder 49, X-Files) stated in an interview in Kalamazoo a few weeks ago that he is thinking about converting to Catholicism. (Read the Ladder 49 thread in this section). He attends a Bible study at a–get this–a hot rod shop!

Here is a link to the interview:

He’s already almost there. He wears five medals, St. Patrick (of course), St. Christopher, St. Florian, a crucifix, and a cross.

So PRAY for him and his lovely family! I plan to write him a note and tell him that I and my husband converted to Catholicism from evangelical Protestantism, and that if he wants to talk, call us. You never know. (I also plan to tell him about my older daughter, who is planning to use Ladder 49 for her competitive figure skating program this season!)
I know Tara Lipinski is Catholic…isn’t Nancy Kerrigan, too?

Olympic 2010 Gold Medalist Kim Yu-Na is also a Catholic. She was baptized in '08 I believe, and isn’t afraid of showing it! She always makes the sign of the Cross before her skates =)

There are a lot of Latino baseball players that are Catholic. In the 90’s it seemed like the sign of the cross before at bats was a lot more common than it is now though. Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez comes to mind specifically.

GO CANES!!! sorry, was unable to pass that up.:o

I saw Ann Rice’s name on the list. She has left the Catholic Church.

Comedian/Actor Bob Newhart grew up Catholic – not sure if he still practices.

Newt Gingrich
General James Longstreet
General Pierre Beauregard
John Wayne
Babe Ruth

Have to echo the great sentiments about Danny Thomas, s/b examined for sainthood.

It seems odd seeing Tom and Gisele on there, considering Tom got actress Bridget Moynahan pregnant (out of wedlock) and then ditched her, during her pregnancy, for Gisele. Hopefully he’s gone to confession. 🤷

RE: Martin Sheen criticism,
yes it’s very anti Catholic to be against nuclear war. How can a man like Martin Sheen who is against nuclear war call himself a Catholic?
No, but his positions on other issues make him someone best not emulated (say, his support for “SSM”.

What’s the big deal? I mean, sure, it was wrong… but we all do ‘wrong’ things.

Would it be easier to swallow if they were Jewish? Or Muslim? Or any Protestant affiliation? I hope not.

Any one who claims a religious strand should follow what that means… but there are so many other things that people do that go against being Catholic… why put them down for their actions, no matter how wrong? 😛

We need to pray for them, and that we don’t make the same mistakes they did, or repeat our own. 👍

I’m not sure that he knew that she was pregnant. I think she was like less than 3 months pregnant so she definitely could have hidden it if she chose, but that’s obviously just speculation. Either way though the Church has taken the stance (and rightly so in my opinion) that children and marriage are separate if they come in that order and that you shouldn’t get married just because of a child. It’s definitely not good but its also probably not the biggest misstep ever made.

Umm!!!

Some of the people on that list consider themselves… Recovering Catholics!!!

So I would do my research before actually bringing them up in discussions!!
