#12 Oakland QB Gannon was featured in Catholic Digest last year as a practicing Catholic.
 
Nicholas Sparks- the author of A Walk to Remember, the Notebook and many others- was featured in our Catholic Digest newspaper here last year as he is a Catholic originally from my home town.
 
Joey Harrington, Detroit Lions… an outstanding athlete and an outstanding man.

As for all those Catholics listed that we don’t think are “good enough” for us to claim… who asked us to claim them? They are on this earth to please God, who reads hearts, not the likes of us, who read “People” magazine. It is not out of line to debate what is and is not moral behavior for a Catholic, but be very careful when it comes to making commentary on the state of some else’s soul. That indulgence makes it far too easy to imperil your own. It is simply not worth it, just based on the moral danger it poses.

Jesus was clear and adamant on this point. Remember the story of the Pharisee and the tax collector at prayer in the synagogue, and who Our Lord told us left there justified and who did not. Pray for fellow sinners as one of us, not as someone beneath us.

At any rate, baptism leaves and indelible mark. Once a Catholic, always a Catholic. Should Tom Cruise come back to the Church, he would not be re-baptised (assuming he was baptized in the first place; I have no first-hand knowledge of that). He would not be in need of any ritual cleansing other than the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which we all need.
 
North Carolina State University head football coach Chuck Amato gives generously to the Catholic Campus Ministry, and requires all of his players to attend Christmas Mass if they are on the road.

Also at NC State, head basketball coach Herb Sendek is a practicing Catholic.

Both have Catholic priests as chaplains.

I have a few more to add:

Mark Wahlberg (American actor) --practicing Catholic

Josh Duhamel (American actor) --practicing Catholic

Stacey Ferguson “Fergie” (American singer) --practicing Catholic
 
Oh, now that this is being updated, I have to mention Stephen Colbert. He is fantastic - he is very strong in his faith (he was his daughter’s sponsor for her confirmation & is a Sunday school teacher) and I feel he’s doing a great service to the faith by bringing Catholicism to the mainstream media in a way no one else has done…ever. He mentions God or Jesus, if not the Pope & Catholicism directly, multiple times a week (he airs 4 nights a week on the otherwise foul Comedy Central) on his satirical political ‘news’ show. In an interview with Time Out New Yourk, he is quoted as saying: “I love my Church, and I’m a Catholic who was raised by intellectuals, who were very devout. I was raised to believe that you could question the Church and still be a Catholic. What is worthy of satire is the misuse of religion for destructive or political gains. That’s totally different from the Word, the blood, the body and the Christ. His kingdom is not of this earth.”

And he’s absolutely hilarious.

What’s your definition of practicing?

My definition of “practicing” means they go to mass. It is not my place to judge them. That is up to the Lord. I know Mark Wahlberg is not married to the mother of his children, but they are a family. And in a more recent interview, he said he attends mass with them every Sunday. As for Josh Duhamel and Fergie, yes they do live together, but they have been seen attending mass together as well. Also, they too have said in more than a few interviews that they are “catholic”, not former catholics. That’s proof enough for me that they are practicing catholics. The rest is between them and God. 🙂

I was watching Rachel Ray yesterday ( it was a repeat from before the summer ) and one of the guy’s from Grey’s Anatomy was on the show. I can’t remember his name! I also don’t watch the show but he is one of the interns… not the real life gay one. (O’Malley on the show ) He used to be a Calvin Klein Model…

Anyways, he has 5 kids and mentioned he had a strong faith, he and his entire family and how blessed they were. He is married to a Latino woman. I am guessing he is Catholic. Anyone know who I am talking about?

There is far more to practicing Catholicism than just going to Mass on Sunday.

His name is Justin Chambers, he plays Alex Karev. He’s not Catholic.

I think that if someone is identified as Catholic and it causes scandal or a reaction of “No way! You’ve got to be kidding” then there is something wrong. Two people publicly identified as living together and also as Catholic don’t really help the cause, do they?

If someone leads a public life and proudly self-identifies as Catholic you bet I have a right to comment on them. I have to explain to my kids why Catholics REALLY aren’t like that. They should just be quiet.

Anyone can judge my public life if they’d like… 👍

While raised Catholic and professing agreement with certain Catholic sensibilities (pro-life issues, stem-cell research) Patricia Heaton actually attends an evangelical Presbyterian church with her family.

She said that being Irish Catholic required doing alot of acting. Ha Ha

I know stephen colbert is catholic, but is he republican? Im having this debate with friends, and theyre calling me an idiot for thinking that he is a republican, and that his T.V. show facade is just an act.
