Like I said before, it is NORMAL to be uncomfortable about it if you don’t understand it. I was the same way. I thought “not my cup of tea”.

As for the services that the Popes were participating in, there is a time for joy, a time for reverence, etc. My experience attending quite a few “charismatic” Masses is that people were actually participating, praising and worshipping our God and meant it. Not everyone, just like at a Mass where people can also praise and worship in a reverent, quiet way. I do both. Both are wonderful.

As far as the Pope condoning it, there is an entire organization sanctioned by the Catholic Church, to help promote it. The Popes condone it because of the fruits. Of course, for the glass half empty crowd, there is some bad fruit, just like in every other organization, effort, renewal movement, etc. Separate the chaff from the wheat, but the suppression of the gift of the Holy Spirit that he actually gave to us to empower the church to carry out its mission of spreading the Good News is the real shame.

Lots of references in the catechism.
I am used to Mass being more solemn, if that is the correct word. I remember going to Midnight Mass at Christmas and the joy I felt just walking into the church, the manger set up in front of the church, the Christmas Carols playing softly while we walked in. I felt joy enough in that and just being in church. I rejoiced and felt glad in my heart. Maybe I’m old school but I prefer the way Mass used to be when I was a young child. 🙂

Actually, St Paul says that “speaking in tongues” is prayer to God – it is not speech directed at other people. Here is exactly what he says: “For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to human beings but to God, for no one listens; he utters mysteries in spirit.” 1 Cor 14:2

Then St Paul says that he speaks in tongues more than anyone but only in private! Here again are his words: “I give thanks to God that I speak in tongues more than any of you, but in the church I would rather speak five words with my mind, so as to instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.” 1 Cor 14:18-19

So there you have it. St Paul prayed in tongues regularly, but only in private, because it is prayer to God, not speech to people. Absolutely scriptural and thoroughly Catholic.
I’m sorry; I still think it is jibberish and disrespectful to God. Okay, it is in the bible but…St. Paul did it in private and that is where I feel such a thing should be kept. I wouldn’t feel comfortable if my Catholic church were Charismatic.

Indeed you are correct. It is gibberish; if for no other reason than the simple fact that we have nothing but a few vague scriptural verses that describe what St. Paul experienced. We have no way of knowing that what people are reporting in the Charismatic Renewal Movement is what St. Paul was talking about. Which is suspect…Which is what I have been saying all along and why I have been saying it.

The bottom line: Adherents to the Charismatic Renewal Movement attempt to hide behind the Pope’s endorsement and that is fine, for them. But until he declares the reported effects of the Charismatic Renewal Movement’s purpose to be Ex Cathedra (which, fortunately will never happen), I will continue to expose the movement for what I believe, in my conscience, it is. A severe distraction born out of Protestant heresy.

Thank you for explaining the scriptual verses to me. It has been a long time since cathecism classes for me but I sure didn’t remember anything much about us speaking in tongues. I, too, feel it is more Protestant than anything. I am going to stick with my good old-fashioned Catholic church. I am comfortable with that and I find enough spirit in the Mass to fill me up.

Thank you for recognizing my concerns. I really don’t mean to come across as hostile on this subject, but when people tell me that the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement saved them or brought them closer to God, I can only conclude that the end result is a lack of faith in the Eucharist. I know I will be attacked for that position, but I cannot imagine why anyone could possibly look for more, when they already have everything in the True Presence.

The Catholic Charismatic Renewal gave me the strength to continue living. I am continually grateful to the Holy Spirit for the gift of prayer tongues.

Blessings,
granny

granny,
The gifts of the Holy Spirit can be studied in 1Cor.14 Spiritual gifts in 1Cor.12. i’ll bet you know this.
In Acts 2, the gift of tongues was first given to the Jews, then to the Gentiles. See Acts 10:44, 19:1-6
I received this gift over 20 years ago. My life has never been the same.

God bless you granny, I’m a ganny too. 🙂

Not to be sarcastic, as I seriously am not trying to be. But I received the gift of baptism just weeks after I was born, during which the Holy Spirit descended upon me and changed my life forever.

Why walk when you are already flying?

That is my position on this too. I find that I get plenty out of Mass. It starts with me Blessing myself when I walk into the church, genuflecting and making the Sign of The Cross before I sit down, me, kneeling in prayer, the word, the eucharist. I think you know what I am trying to say. I am leery, also, why anyone connected with the Catholic Church felt they need more as though something were lacking during the Mass. I’m sure I am not popular either but…I don’t get it and it isn’t included in the Mass I’ve come to know and love.

I don’t think you will find a well-grounded Catholic charismatic who does not see the Eucharist as the focus of his/her life and faith. Are people who pray the Rosary, the Litany to the Sacred Heart, the Divine Office or the Divine Mercy chaplet looking for more when they have everything in the True Presence? I have heard many stories of protestants being brought into the Catholic church because they decided to try praying the rosary or praying to Mary and, lo and behold, that “Catholic invention of repetitive prayer” led them to the fullness of faith in our church. They discovered the Real Presence later, but the rosary was the foot in the door for them. Does that make their conversion invalid or not-as-good as if their conversion was a direct result of an encounter with the Lord in the Real Presence?

From my youth, I can remember priests being proud of – and being liked by the congregation for – being able to say the Latin mass in twenty minutes or less – including homily – to get the folks in and out on Sundays. I can remember very arrogant and even mean priests who could spin a good homily and knew their Latin backwards and forwards. I remember the large percent – I would guess at least 25% – of people in our parish who used to pray the rosary during the Latin mass, rather than following along with the Latin-English missals, even though the priests would often remind them to put the rosaries away during mass.

The point I am trying to make is that there are abuses or errors in every aspect of church worship because the worshippers are humans. Sometimes we’re proud of ourselves when we obviously shouldn’t be, sometimes we’re distracted when we should focus on the Real Presence of our Lord, sometimes we even pray well, aided by the graces of the Holy Spirit.

True charismatic worship is not self-centered, it is Christ-centered. My experience with the charismatic renewal has been Christ-centered, but I have seen some things that look like “forced” expressions of charismatic piety. I’ve also seen people in the non-charismatic parishes to which I’ve belonged that look like they’re putting on a show for others. But who’s to know their hearts? There are some Marian groups which I find too “far out” on the conservative side, but I trust that their hearts are in pursuit of our Lord.

I apologize for rambling. It’s 12:30 and I am tired. But God bless you and everyone else on this board.

To call this a protestant thing is not a true statement. God gives this gift of Himself to those who obey Him. That is what His word says.

Tounges is not so vague a thing The scriptures do describe this.
Jesus told His disciples to wait in Jeruselem for the promise of the Father, which is the Holy Spirit. Notice that there were about 120 people in the upper room in acts chapter one. The apostles were there Jesus’ bretheren were there, Mary the mother of Jesus was there. If it was so important for them to recieve this gift from God Why do many of you seem to discount this.

I would not think that anyone here would put themselves on the same level as the apostles or Mary. To say that mass is enough the euchrist or praying the rosary is all I need then why did God do this pouring out of His Spirit on those in the upper room as is described in act chapter 2.

Isnt saying that I dont need this and discounting this putting oneself on a plane that is greater then the Virgin Mary or the apostles or those in the early church. Why is this so Important for them and not for us?

I think that it is great that the Pope would endorse this. I cant understand why you would fight against this. If the Pope did not indorse this wouldn't you be oblidged to obey his decree. Arent you oblidged to obey him if he endorses something? Are you allowed to pick and choose if you are a devout catholic?

HI! Any Charismatic churches in CHICAGO???
Thank you!
Welcome to the boards, Faith Phoenix! You’ll find the True Presence of our Lord in the Catholic church! Fr. Groeschel likes to tell the story of the African-American ladies – Baptists or A.M.E.s, I think – who would come to his church in Harlem for Eucharistic Adoration. They would tell him that they came because they could sense that the “Sweet Lord Jesus is really there!”

Here are some links from the Chicago archdiocesan website. If you contact the local office in Forest Park, they will try to answer your questions. They are a real helpful, real nice group of folks.

Are people who pray the Rosary, the Litany to the Sacred Heart, the Divine Office or the Divine Mercy chaplet looking for more when they have everything in the True Presence?
Hello Dan. To answer your question:

I would like to think that people who are doing the Rosary, the Divine Office, or Chaplet of Divine Mercy are not seeking anything more. Although, I suspect a good number of them are. Look at these Novena practices. Say a prayer for nine days and get what you want! That stuff doesn’t fly with me either.

Things like the Rosary and Divine Office are prayer tools. They don’t reshape the Mass, rather they coincide with the solemnity of the Mass. Now if there was a Rosary group that made the claim that if you pray the Rosary a certain way, Mary will appear to you, I’d have a serious problem with that. To me, the Charismatic Renewal Movement has placed far too much emphasis on feel-good, “let’s get all warm and fuzzy with the Holy Spirit” kind of worship. That works fine in Protestant Churches because they (A) don’t have the True Presence and (B) most don’t even have a Liturgy. I understand that they need something greater. But my argument is that you don’t see Rosary or Divine Office prayers going around on these boards boasting about how they have special powers or how the Rosary saved their life.

hope7,

This sort of response is exactly what bothers me about the Charismatic Movement. There is always this approach that those that do not experience the gifts that you claim to have, are lacking somehow. Their faith isn’t strong enough or they aren’t open enough. That’s a load of nonsense!

The Mass, as you failed to indicate, is indeed enough. The Charisms of the New Testament served a very special purpose. Christianity was nothing back then and it was God’s Will that it become something. Certain help was needed to pull that off. But now, with the Eucharist available in nearly every locality on the planet, we can put away these lessor experiences.

As for your question about the Pope. My answer is no, by cannon law, I am not obligated to have faith in something he endorses. We are only obligated to have faith in that which he speaks ex cathedra. And that just doesn’t happen all too often, let alone to be wasted on something as insignificant as Protestant superstition.

Hope,

One last thought for you before I go to bed.

Please offer me your explanation for why this speaking in tongues gibberish is nonexistent in the Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Churches? Are you about to suggest that all of us Eastern Christians are as lacking in faith and openness to the gifts of the Spirit as you see in me? Remember, the eastern traditions are quite a bit older than the western traditions. Would it not be logical that if this "gift"you claim you have were real, it would be more prevalent in my tradition?

If anyone on this board would like to see the True Charisms of the Holy Spirit, I invite you to my Melkite Parish. You won’t see anyone shouting neogolisms or falling over with hands raised high. You won’t hear any guitars playing or any boasting. But what you will find, though, is the love of the Holy Spirit alive in every parishioner. You will be filled by the Holy Spirit and all without a Charismatic Renewal performance.

Oh, that is ironic you mention praying the Rosary. I lost my son in a car accident 3 years ago. It was a very dark time for me and, often, still is. I found another mother online who had just lost her son too. She had been raised Protestant. As she and her husband drove to where her son had passed, she started praying the Rosary. (She had been interested in the Catholic church for a long time). Her husband asked her to pray it out loud as they drove. She said a peace, like she had never felt, came over her, making her ready to face what was to come. She turned to the church, the Rosary, and our Mother Mary often. She and her husband decided to take classes. I do keep in touch with her, now and then. I am going to write her today, in fact, to see how she is doing. Sorry for rambling on so.

I lost my way after my son died. I was angry at God, the world, everyone…for just going on and living. I would get angry if it were a sunny day. I felt the world should be grieving with me. My former boss, Ed, left his job and went into the seminary. He was 49 at this time. We stayed in touch and even got together for lunch now and then. He was very instrumental in helping me find my way back. He gave me his rosary that he took to seminary with him. He was my best friend. A year and a half after I lost my son, I lost Ed too. It was very sudden and unexpected. He had a blood clot in his lung. I was devastated but this time I remembered his comforting words to me and I held tight to my faith. I talk to, both my son and Ed, frequently and tell them to look out for each other.

You are correct; if one is truly in faith and one feels speaking in tongues is lifting them higher, than my love goes with them. As you said, it is those who ‘try to hard’ when they are NOT feeling the Holy Spirit who speak in tongues anyway and it means nothing.

I may have to check out an Eastern Rite church. Would all my sacraments be accepted there? ie: Baptism, marriage, even though I am a widow. Also, do they youth get confirmed?

Thank you for reminding me that we, as humans, err, not the Lord. I apologize to anyone I may have offended who are Charismatic. We all love the Lord; we all have different ways of praising Him. As long as our prayers are heart-felt, He knows we love Him.

Wow! I feel, now, like I am not good enough with praying the rosary, having faith, praying to our Blessed Mother, etc. No disrespect to you but did you read your post back? I feel as though I would be disregarded if I walked into a Charismatic church and did NOT feel the need to worship in tongues. Do you have congregants that choose not to praise in tongues? If so, what is their method of prayer while tongues is going on?

Hope,

Everything has to be to read in context. The idea that every Bible verse is relevant to today is also a Protestant invention. Sometimes it’s just history. With this in mind, please answer my question.
