I haven’t read the article, but if what the headline said is true AND the head of that Branch of CC is a Catholic. He/she should be fired and the honor publicly renounced.

If you are a Catholic the one constant is the fact life, ALL life, is God’s. We as men don’t have the right to destroy it. ( unless sent to war or in the defense of another life ) To honor a Catholic that doesn’t practice the simplest, single foundation of his religion, is ridiculous.

Remove the head of that branch of CC. Remove the honor bestowed and get a backbone! Stand up for the Church and its teachings.

I’m trying to understand the problem here. He wasn’t honored for his abortion advocacy. He wasn’t honored for his views on same-sex marriage. He was honored for helping the poor - a good and noble pursuit. Refusing to honor him for good he has done simply because he has done bad elsewhere seems backwards to me.

Like raising a child, you discourage the bad behavior, but also encourage the good behavior. If you ground your child for misbehaving, and then he wants to do his homework while grounded, and you forbid it because he misbehaved, that is completely backwards. I see the same thing here - abhorrence at the choice to reinforce his good behavior. What is wrong with that? 🤷

You thank him for his work, and then spell out that his support for two non-negotiables in the Church are very awful.

But you do NOT give him an award. When an organization goes out of its way to give an award to someone, especially like this, with someone who has public views like his, you are tacitly saying that his good works “outweigh” the bad he has done. And that is NOT true.

Again, why? I would reward my child for good done, regardless of bad done. Why is this different? It’s classic conditioning. If you just punish bad behavior, and don’t reward good behavior, they never learn.

An award shows not just approval of good actions, but an approval of the person a well. Would you give an award to Jerry Sandusky for his work with kids he didn’t rape? Of course not! And this politician is advocating something worse, the killing of children. Giving an award is tacit approval of the whole picture person. It gives great scandal to others who see this and wonder if his other actions are ok with the church.

I certainly don’t see the giving of an award as tacit approval of every action of that person. Is giving a kid a birthday present tacit approval of his getting in a fight at school the month prior? No. Like I said before, reinforce the good behavior, punish the bad behavior.
