BUFFALO, NY (WBFO) - Catholic Charities has announced its goal for the upcoming 2011 Appeal. Details of this year’s campaign were unveiled at a Lackawanna food pantry.
$10.5 million – That’s the goal Catholic Charities has set for its 2011 Appeal. It’s the same total as last year’s campaign. According to Catholic Charities statistics, nearly 160,000 Western New Yorkers are served by Catholic Charities programs.
Greg Maher is chairing this year’s campaign
“One and ten Western New Yorkers receive assistance from Catholic Charities,” said Maher.
Those programs include the food pantry where this year’s appeal was announced. Dennis Walczak, Catholic Charities’ chief executive officer, says it’s just one of many former Catholic parish properties that have been transformed to serve people in need.
“A few are still undergoing the transformation, but all represent new life…here too in Lackawanna where now 288 individuals walk through these doors each week.” said Walczak,
According to Catholic Charities’s numbers, about 50-percent of those served are non-Catholics.
While last year’s overall campaign fell just one-half of one-percent shy of the goal, officials note that corporate donations were up by more than 2%. Appeal week takes place April 10th through the 17th, though the campaign officially ends on June 30th.
