There’s probably more sin going on at a bar than at Hooters. So by that logic, we should avoid bars too.

I didn’t mean to imply that Hooters is a brothel at all, but I did wish to show that people, by our fallen nature, will reason our way into any sin. Perhaps not all men are sinning by entering a Hooters but they are sending a message that they support the established location and all it entails (which may be a sin. The blind leading the blind so to speak) Letting ourselves buy in to this society’s current standard of morality is folly. Jesus said many things to show us this. Not the least of which was “Be in the world but not of the world” how is it today that we still latch on so tightly to our secular desires while we let Jesus’ teachings take a back seat.

Why attend a place like Hooters if all you want is a honest beer, some wings, and to watch TV with some friends? Can’t that be done at many, many other places that don’t require their wait staff to objectify themselves?
Maybe, or maybe the patron just supports superior chicken wings. I havent been in a Hooters in years, and I try to avoid greasy food, but I can say they have some of the most delicious and affordable raw oysters you can find anywhere!

puuuleeeez…

You go there for the food? It ain’t that great!

Do you have a lack of restaurants in your town?
It’s not that bad. I guess tastes are a matter of taste. (sarcasm smiley back atcha)

I can see why this was cancelled. The very name of the restraunt is a deliberate provocation, though I do not consider the uniforms that bad or sexual. I am sure that there would not be similar objection to a walkathon or basketball game if the uniforms were covered the same amount of skin. Yet, they name alone should suffice to give pause as to the appropriateness of identifying it with Catholic Charities.

I see young women come dressed less modestly to Mass than the woman with the Hula-Hoop in the opening post of the thread.

If the opening post picture had a more attractive good looking woman, I’m sure it would have been removed. Instead it was just a goofy looking hoola hooping girl wearing skimpy clothes. Who, in my opinion, as a younger man , is not very appealing at all. Hence the a poor representation.
The business angle to promote gawking and ogling waitresses alone by Al Bundy type male customers suffices (not that all who go there are Al Bundy types)-- Regardless if they are just in small shirts, short shorts and it isn’t a strip club.
The people talking about lukewarm Catholics in this thread are more correct than the justifiers. This is a restaurant that uses a part of a woman as its marketing gimmick!

Agreed. Can you believe Catholics are actually discussing the correctness of the moral 'call by an extension of our Otherworldly Body, to decline a Tacky Restaurant Chain named, HOOTERS?

The fact that People are throwing out “relative to this” or that, usually that means something is up or not right. If it was innocuous none of this rationalizing would be needed. Is it the worst thing in the world? No. But it certainly is indicative of a tolerance or a numbness;

It is right for Catholic Charities to decline Hooters. Does that sentence need to be explained?
We Catholics need to get our acts together!! If we can’t even get on the same page with the small stuff, how are we going to tackle the big stuff??

I feel most of the people saying its no big deal, have less objections to those qualms about occasions for sin, or lustful thoughts, and are giving Hooters pardon because they are more worried about what the ‘world’ may think of us…Who cares. Sorry Hooters and Hooters customers!

Eddie you are correct that some women come more and more immodestly dressed to Mass than that OP pic of the unattractive woman though. Maybe this problem should be discussed more than this Hooters non-news story; I personally think the veils need to be brought back, not just in the Latin Masses but in general for Mass attire.

It certainly gives more emphasis as a reminder for men to treat women as an honored opposite sex, daughters of Our Blessed Mother, rather than a piece of meat.
It also reminds men , especially those who are called to Marriage what/who to sacrifice themselves for…

I myself am upset at the “modesty police” and i am through now with Catholics/religion because i don’t want to live this this extremist mentality and i don’t only want to wear kneelength or below skirts.
I do wear “thighlength” stuff and i do wear singlet tops and i’ve been greatly affected by the many Catholics that put you in fear that you will go to hell and judge you as immodest and will be culpable before God etc simply for wanting to be a normal, healthy, non extremist human being. The requirements of many Catholicms are the same as Muslims extremists or Baptist Christians-although the lengths they deem as modest are different the mentality is the exact same.

That said,I wouldn’t work at Hooters. The below are just my personal views and could be right or wrong and no way represent the Churches views. My view is it isn’t the clothing type but rather that Hooters is designed to objectify. But i do think it promotes an “undesirable culture”.It does appear to me a bit “cavemanish”.
Ie:the women with the “boobies” and the starry eyed, sleazy men that come and take a souvenir photo of themselves with the famed boobies;)
Even just the name…imagine if i opened a place called “t its” or “a ss”
It just seems primitive and cavemanish.
Although, perhaps i’m just speaking off emotion instead of clarity?

It does seem like a odd choice and bad judgment call for a Catholic Charity, especially if there were other restaurants in town where it could have been held.
But it sems they’ve fixed the situation now so all good?
music2, I think it would be wise to stave off lumping the religions into one morally equivalent form of puritanical prudishness; I do think overconcern over outward discipline is emphasized, and maybe some fall guilty of it misguidedness. But ‘extremist’ is a relative word! So it’s not one to throw around ( especially in a culture that is drifting at a fast pace to an extreme end they now call ‘normal’ ) You ARE on point in the distinctions between Hooters, and a woman just dressing pretty.
I think you are mistaken on superficial qualms with what constitutes “extremism” regarding ‘modesty’ If one learns more about the virtue of Chastity, perhaps one will realize that ‘extremism’ was a misnomer improperly applied to Catholics. I wouldn’t say its all the same. IF one is disproportionally chastised for a skirt, that is not a reflection of the Catholic faith being ‘extreme’, rather just a reflection of imprudently RASH Christians.
For instance, I think skirts below the knee just make girls like frumpy, but certainly short shorts to mass, and other revealing tops, is no more extreme than criticizing why some dude comes in a wife beater, and flip flops.
As for outside the mass, it is all relative to the culture we live in right now…I don’t think Catholics, in fact they’re accused right now of being too lax AND immodest. They’re actually quite wimpish. They say “i’m okay, you’re okay” they don’t want to advertise their faith, they don’t want to stand up for anything. If you’ve ever been to the Masses and there are anecdotes in Jerusalem, that the Catholics stand out for having the most immodest dress. I don’t know who these ‘extreme’ Catholics are, but they are well within their right to say what’s up with the outfits at mass in my opinion.

I agree though, I wouldn’t want women to start wearing Burkinis or something. Nor do I think an attractive woman wearing a nice skirt is being ‘immodest’ necessarily. But as a dude I am biased.
Hello and welcome to CAF. Do not worry about the attitudes of some who may be judgmental. If you are wearing a skirt and top you like and are not trying purposely to look slutty or to cause lust, then I would say it is sin of the one judging you without knowing your heart, not your own. There’s nothing wrong with a pretty girl desiring simply to dress pretty!🙂
I agree blacksword. As a dude I agree. I don’t believe in the opposite end either. Nor is it wrong for a man to appreciate the beauty of a woman, in a way that isn’t to leer but to adore. Beauty is beauty! and the Saints are beautiful.

Also Bishop Sheen, mentions
Three types of impulse - Desire

Sex - Body,
Ego -Mind - Power,
Property-possessions

He calls all these impulses GOOD
…1.) We would not have the family. 2.) We would not have a desire for Truth, we would not have students. We would not have legitimate ambitions, we would not have physical, mental, and spiritual perfections. 3.) And then furthermore , property, after all our desire for property, is really a desire to have some external guarantee of our inner freedom. I am free on the inside because I can call something else, something that I have my own. These are good but they can also be bad, or perverted in some way.

Comparing chicken wings to a prostitute’s bed is a little over the top, don’t you think? Should some men stay away from Hooter’s for being an occasion of sin? Certainly! But that doesn’t mean automatically** that all men are sinning in entering the place for an honest beer and some wings, or to watch a game on the tv with friends. **Alcoholics should avoid any kind of nightclub probably too, but should no one else ever enter such a place? I don’t think that follows.
I think the context should be: Would you bring a family friend who is a priest to a Hooters? Not wondering about the subjectivity of what is an occasion of sin for someone v another.

One priest said, to be on guard and talked about a scandalous picture he saw and requested to remove it, and the owner said he didn’t think it was a big deal. The priest said obviously he was either given tremendous grace, or already in a state of sin. It reminds me of a man who thinks he is convinced in his righteousness and unnecessarily puts himself in situations he doesn’t need to because he is good by his own will and can’t be tempted, rather than being delivered by the grace of God.
I’m not saying one should be a prude, and Hooters is a strip club. But one doesn’t have to tolerate or promote the chain’s business angle. If one is eating there because lack of restaurant selections whatevah 🤷 It’s another thing to say it’s perfectly neutral.

For instance, when I grew more fervent in the faith, and started to frequent confessions, what I once considered no ‘big thing’ in my teenage years, not to long ago, with more grace you become acute to what isn’t right, especially with the stuff on television, BROADCAST, primetime, it’s like "wow, this stuff is playing and children are vulnerable!! ’ I’m not saying I’m any holier than I was in my teenage years, but you do tend to notice what you assumed was ‘normal’ by the worlds standards was pretty bad.

I don’t understand the need to defend Hooters… It is what it is, but it does not need to be defended. It’s just one amongst many that objectifies women.

Why are we trying to give this occasion for sin an INCH?
Here is a relevant description of Chastity/regarding occasion of sins, by the same priest I mentioned:
I knew that I could not otherwise be continent, unless God gave it. - Book of Wisdom
Unless God gives us his help, no one can be chaste.
The Catechism, also recognizes that the acquisition of this virtue [of Chastity] also depends A LOT upon the help from the culture in which we live in. That is, we should BE HELPING EACH OTHER to live Chastely. The culture, the society in which we live has a lot to do with fostering this virtue. The Catechism says, Chastity represents an imminently personal task, of course first and foremost it depends on us. **It ALSO INVOLVES A CULTURAL EFFORT for there is an interdependence between personal betterment, and the improvement of society. Chastity presupposes respect for the rights of the person. **In particular the right to receive information and in education that respect the moral and spiritual dimensions of human life – so this is what society SHOULD be providing for individuals out there in order to help promote a good, virtuous life.
While a chaste person is made similar to the angels, an unchaste person is made similar to the beasts…

They are the something worse, at least in most cases. Sure, one can find a modest swimsuit today, but it is difficult to do so (and some would argue it is impossible). Again, comparing a bad thing (Hooters outfits) to something worse (immodest swimwear) does not make the bad thing (Hooters outfits) good.

Now, back to the topic so this thread is not completely derailed to become a swimsuit thread.
Hey there Pam, can you post a picture or link of a modest swimsuit, my friend? I have no idea how does it look, because I always saw revealing swimsuits, never saw a modest swimsuit. Thanks.

peace and blessing. :).

Pam?

Since I posted the above, I actually have learned that even those who say a swimsuit cannot be modest in any case would have to agree that they are wrong when they see those at the following links.

Oh my apologies, Pam(Jakasaki) use the same Avatar, and I was sleepy when I wrote the reply. So i think I have posted my reply only seeing the profile picture. :p. anyway thank you for correcting me. And for those links. 🙂 Good and modest dress for swimming, but the swim cap sometimes remind the scarf of Muslim women, that is necessary for them. well except the caps, the dress are very good I think.

I know I’m going to probably be outnumbered on this one, but I don’t see a problem with it. Hooter’s is a company (who has worked with the catholic center in the past for events) trying to help the community they live in. For the Catholics that don’t agree with it, you have a choice to not participate/donate to this charity drive. St. Patrick’s probably has other charity events.

St. Patrick’s helps 9,000 people and probably needs all the help they can get. My problem with the people complaining is: are they going to make up for the money that would have been made at the event?? They complained because it was against their morals but was it worth the center losing money (I know I don’t know the full story, so maybe those that complained are donating to cover…but the story didn’t mention it).

Most people on here will probably disagree but Hooter’s isn’t that bad. My family has always gone to Hooter’s since I was a little child and I have never “lusted over the girls” like another article stated.
Your anecdote aside, there are lots of porn stars stars who give money to “good causes” too. They can do their own fundraisers, if they actually care. Catholic Charities will do just fine with God as her ally. She doesn’t need Ron Jeremy to be the MC to grab more attention.

I wnt to Hooter’s numerous times in my twenties as a single guy in the Air Force, and didn’t think much about it. But for reasons of not endorsing an organization that uses sex to peddle their wares, I stopped buying from them years ago, for the same reasons i asked my wife to stop buying garbage from Victoria’s Secret when we met. She agrees with me for the same reasons.

Seriously - the people running this event who thought this would be a good idea have to be completely brainless or immoral. How they thought this wouldn’t get them flack is beyond me. Fire them and move on.

That’s the point. Our personal views of supporting certain businesses aside, its the idiocy of people running the event that is apparent, and good charities need better leadership if they actually care about the poor. Common sense should have told them it was a bad PR move. There is a lot we CAN do in life, but that doesn’t mean we should.

Mitt Romney is well within his right to call Herman Cain a racial slur in the next debate. Doesn’t mean it would be a good idea from a PR standpoint, however.
I never dined at any Hooters restaurant, but together with with Vespasian, the Roman emperor I believe that ‘pecunia not olet’ the money does not stink.

Jesus did not reject the precious oil earned by prostitution.

I also wonder that in case of 9000 recipient why was a dozen or so complaint was enough to stop the event, and how much the complainers donated to the cause?
The difference is, Jesus didn’t tell the lady to go sell her wares and turn a few in an effort to raise the funds.

A girl at Hooters is designed to be a show piece. The selling point is come look at the pretty girls and their big boobies.
Theres nothing wrong with beauty and theres nothing wrong with breasts but i think there is something wrong-or at least distasteful-about objectifying.
In essence,it seems to me that if you work at Hooters you are boobs.
Does it promote lust?I cant say.Maybe, maybe not.My guess is that some healthy normla men can go there without feeling lust and just eat lunch.
But i do think it promotes an “undesirable culture”.It does appear to me a bit “cavemanish”.

You left the Church because you couldn’t expose your knees? You’re right - your persecution is a lot like having your head lopped off for being an infidel in Tal Afar, Iraq. Forgive me if I don’t weep with sadness for your false dilemma…

Why on earth would a Catholic charity even consider holding a Hooters event for a fundraiser??? Hooters is not a business that upholds Catholic moral values! In fact, it is a business that thrives on sin!
