Catholic church excommunicates Brazil priest for liberal views

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - The Catholic Church has excommunicated a Brazilian priest after he defended homosexuality, open marriage and other practices counter to Church teaching in online videos.

In a statement released late on Monday, the priest’s diocese said Father Roberto Francisco Daniel, known to local parishioners as Padre Beto, had “in the name of ‘freedom of expression’ betrayed the promise of fealty to the Church.”

The priest “injured the Church with grave statements counter to the dogma of Catholic faith and morality.” The actions amount to “heresy and schism,” the statement said, the penalty for which is excommunication, or expulsion from the Church.

Excellent!

Keep in mind that excommunication is considered a “medicinal” penalty…one that is intended as a “wake up call” – a final call for repentance.

I hope this Fr. Daniel heeds this and returns to the Faith.

But in the meantime, I hope the bishops enforce this excommunication and actually ensure that this priest cannot continue to scandalize his flock.

Absolutely. I also hope to see other bishops follow this bishop’s lead. Perhaps it might also help as a wake up call to those bishops who are the ones encouraging heretical views as well.

Indeed. Good for the Bishop for doing what was right for the Church! Hopefully this priest remembers that God is higher than man, and begins acting accordingly.

Guess this priest slept through his seminary studies on the Old and New Testament. That pesky old 6th Commandment just wasn’t clear enough for him 😉

I’m pretty sure this view is considered heresy in EVERY Christian denomination (including Judaism, Islam, etc…) .

This isn’t a priest trying to “liberalize” this is a priest completely out of touch with even the spirit of Christianity! Sad really - shocking that he may infect the minds of some parishioners under his care.

I will pray for him that he recognizes the grave errors of his way and returns to the faith as a true Child of God.

His meant to lead people to god not to hell. So glad his been excommunicated.

Well, liberal, conservative or whatever, those are grave matters in Catholic teaching.

Don’t let the door hit your backside on the way out, Padre Beto. Repent, however, and I’ll be the first to open the door and welcome you back. 🙂
 
Excellent news! Wish they’d do some housecleaning in the US as well, though that would decrease the number of priests we have considerably. Then again, Pope Emeritus Benedict did say the Church needs to get smaller. 👍

Amen to that. This priest is from a diocese not far from where I live in. I’m not Catholic anymore, but I think the church did the right thing excommunicating Father Beto.

I don’t think there would be that many priests that would be lost. When you begin to install some discipline, it only takes a few punishments handed out to alert the rest of the flock to get in line. Lay down the hammer on the most disobedient ones, and the others will soon fall in line.
 
The 2nd half of the “story” is pure commentary. Reuters highlighting it’s desire for a “more modern Church”.
