dress codes…IMHO, are complete idiocy. People like having their hands held, i don’t. if folks want to dress in tank tops, so be it. i don’t care, thats between them and God.

People want to regulate good taste inside and outside of Church, and you can’t do it. well, they can try to, but they’re wrong.

i want a Church, not a nanny. Jesus wouldn’t have been wearing acceptable garb to enter his own Church under the Manilla code.
Would it bother you if church goers attended mass in their underwear?
Would it bother you if church goers attended mass wearing nothing at all?
Would you like a catholic church to be like a nudist camp?
Would you feel at home with things like that?

I would not feel at home, I’ll wear a suitcoat and tie and slacks and dress shoes and dress socks to rebel against it. It would bother me. I hate to say it but what you say is uncalled for and I don’t agree in what you mentioned. Churchgoers dress in appropriate attire because it is the thing to do and it is an act of traditional values and we should obligated to dress in accordinence to what is right.

It may not bother you on this but it does bother me.
There are those that would agree with me on this and I guarentee it.

I agree with you. Those people who says that others who dresses inappropriately in a mass doesn’t bother them is either…encouraged by the temptations they see or they just don’t care about building up the body of Christ.

When women begin to dress immodestly, and men to make fun of religion, it is the beginning of the end. - Seneca

I recently had an incident where an invited guest to my daughters confirmation was ask to leave because he was dressed inappropriately. He had on long shorts and collared shirt was neat and clean and not a member of our church. That evening I sent an email expressing my sadness at the situation. I received a letter which is very confusing, in part it states they follow the county school dress code and goes on about the distractions and complaints received in the past. When did our church become so judgmental. I get the dressing morally and have always instructed my children to dress appropriately, but then the church allows the teens to wear jeans and hang out clothes to their 5PM mass. In my entire life this is the first time I have heard of someone being asked to leave the church.

I am only guessing because I have no idea ,but shorts might be considered beach attire?

Why is it nobody complains about being thrown off a golf course for inappropriate dress attire but we get all indignant about being asked to dress modestly at church?

I just watched this homily…

He has some very strong views on modesty and the way people dress for Mass.

I am more understanding of those who are poor or may be dressed for their work (either coming from work or going to work after Mass, and do not have a chance to wear something nice).

My views are more for those who can afford a nice outfit but choose to come to Mass looking like they are ready to work in the yard wearing a tank top & shorts, going to the club, a rock concert, or go to the beach. At least in the summer if I wear a nice sleeveless top to church, I wear a shawl then remove it after Mass is done.

In certain restaurants, you can’t get in without jacket and tie. I fail to see why we should hold ourselves to a lower standard for Mass.

There is a difference between “Modest” and “casual”. Wearing jeans and a polo shirt to mass (for the guys) or jeans and a nice blouse/shirt (for women) is not the same as a woman wearing a mini skirt and low cut blouse or tank top.

Personally, I’d rather see people in jeans and tee shirts than mini skirts and spaghetti strap or strapless tops where they just about fall out of them.

As for proper dress…yes…we dress for weddings and funerals…even for other special occasions but think of it this way. Most people dress that way because they feel they HAVE to dress up or they may offend others around them. Now think of the people you love the most…your parents…brothers…sisters…family members…when you are around them…you are more relaxed…more comfortable so you feel more comfortable putting on the sweat pants and tee shirt rather than the dress slacks and shirt or dress. It’s because we are amongst our closest friends and family that we can relax a bit and don’t feel the need to get dressed up as they are not sitting in judgement of our attire. If God is our Father…and we are His sons and daughters…why not have a relaxed comfortable relationship with Him. I’m sure he’d rather see me in my jeans and keeping His commandments and trying my best to live by His laws…than see me walk in dressed to the nines and espousing pro choice views and coming to Communion with my 3rd husband.

James, 2: vs 1- 4…

1 My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

People tend to use all sorts of reasons to ‘dress down’ for Mass.

Christ is not your earthly Mom or Dad or sibs—Church is not your living room. It’s not about your personal comfort, but there are some people who seem to think it is.

How you dress does indeed effect how you both think and act.

I’m sure the good Lord does not take offense if I come to Mass in Jeans. I’m sure He is just as happy to see me at Mass as the millionaire in the $5,000 suit driving his BMW. You’ve heard the saying “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”. I don’t think that God, who can see into our hearts, really cares what we wear. He just wants us to worship him, do good to others and live a good moral life. What we put on our backs or feet should not be a concern for those around us.

I think it’s sad and very damaging that the concept of ‘the-whole-world-should-be-my-living-room’ has spread so far.

The concept of respect has gone out the window with this attitude toward dress, and it has only strengthened those elements of rebellion already present in all people.

So you would not have a problem with me comming in wearing wifebeater shirt, and swim shorts to mass and sit next to you? You would not be distracted at all?

I would be distracted by the armpit hair hanging out of your wifebeater and likely what else may occur with your swimsuit. C’mon- don’t be tacky! A tank top and swimming trunks are not modest apparel in Church, a clean pair of jeans and a clean polo shirt are. For some, that may be the best they happen to own at the time. Would you prefer they not come to Mass at all until they can purchase a dress or suit for themselves and all in their family? Even if it means going without groceries for a week or missing a utility payment or the rent? There is a big difference between clean jeans/khakis with a golf shirt and a tank top and swim trunks!

Nobody’s saying that.

Though I did see a lady in a housedress at the Vigil today.

Lol I agree with you, but my question was directed towards that one poster who said that everyone should come as they are. I mentions that particualar style of clothing because I’ve seen it happened many times in the summer. At my home parish we have guys come in wearing basketball jersey and shorts. At the parish where we have the EF, we had a guy in his teens come in during mass (yes the EF) wearing the same description I just gave because there is a pool park nearby. See what I mean? A simple polo and clean dark jeans would be fine or even a clean plain t-shirt with the slogans or images would be fine.

😊 I’m sorry I misinterpreted your comment. I thought it was one of those “you need to wear a dress or a suit and anyone can find one at Goodwill” type of comments that doesn’t take into consideration that not every Goodwill carries everyone’s size. I’ve read those on other threads from people who think just because they found a suit and dress shoes for $2 in their size, everyone else can and should. Sorry about that!! When I hear “come as you are” I think clean jeans and a T-shirt without anything tacky written on it, not a wifebeater and speedos 😉

I am all for wearing a suit if one likes, I like them but wear them occasionally. Some parishes don’t have AC system so in the summer it gets hotter than well you know lol and wearing a suit is just torture. To dress appropriate is not the same to dress in designer clothes, but neither does it mean to “come as you are”.
