“House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) denounced efforts by the Catholic Church to persuade the Department of Health and Human Services to rescind new regulations that will force Catholics to engage in activities that violate their faith. The regulations would require all Americans to purchase coverage for services—like abortion—that are banned by Catholic tenets. The regulations also require all health service providers to offer these services regardless of any personal, religious, or ethical objections. …”

When the Catholic church began to accept money from the government how could the Bishops, Catholics, and others
not have foreseen that this would come to pass? The American Roman Catholic church, cannot serve TWO masters.
As Americans we are free to follow the teachings of the Holy Roman Catholic Church trusting in God.
Many of our freedoms as Americans require the use of a lawyer. Christ did not teach us to expect others to treat us kindly.
There are Roman Catholics being put in jail, some put to death all over the world this very day.
God bless Nancy and may she find truth…sooner than later.🙂

Sorry, but the news site you linked, is staunchly conservative and just browsing through the headlines, inaccurate.

It wouldn’t doubt me that Nancy Pelosi would do what the article is saying, I’m just skeptical of their accuracy.

The question remains is it proper for a church that accepts money from the government to not therefore expect to be also required to follow the rules attached to that money?

Good one, Nancy! 👍

Not bad for a woman who never formally attended clown school… :juggle: She has a bright future ahead of her at Comedy Central or the Laugh Factory.

The link is a satire site, not a news site.

You might as well link to The Onion…

You realize:

a) this is a blog, not a news site

b) John Semmons is a satirist. A very good satirist (if you’re not careful, you might forget that he is writing satire) (I read his posts frequently on another site and you would be amazed at the number of people he “gets” there, despite the frequency of his posting)

You will note the byline:

The Church accepted money from the government to do what the government would otherwise have done, not as a form of charity.

And the receipt of money is irrelevent in this situation anyway, because the issues are completely different. The Church or members of the Church pay for the health insurance–they do not get money from the government to pay the insurance. Those who pay for the insurance ought to be able to refrain from paying to fund activities which are morally repugnant.

So… I am confused.

Did N. Pelosi say or not say the things that are attributed to her?
“The Church’s attempt to meddle with affairs of state is offensive to our system of government,” Pelosi contended. “We don’t live in a theocracy. In America, we have separation of church and state. It’s not their job to criticize our laws. Didn’t Jesus instruct his followers to render unto Caesar? Why isn’t the Church hierarchy obeying this divine guidance?”

“Besides, what they’re asking for is special treatment,” Pelosi went on. “We can’t have different rules for Catholics than for everyone else. The law has to apply to all. There can be no exceptions.”

“They don’t even know how to play the game,” Pelosi laughed. “All they have to offer is an argument. Where are the campaign donations, the sweetheart deals, and insider information? I mean, what do we in government have to gain for giving them what they ask? If they can’t make it worth our while why should we listen?”

I didn’t see anything about troops and barnyards. Actually I didn’t “read” anything-- just zoomed down to “Catholic Church.”

Sorry, I didn’t realise this was a joke.

How can she continue to call herself a '‘devout Catholic,’ it is shameful.

The question remains is it proper for a church that accepts money from the government to not therefore expect to be also required to follow the rules attached to that money?..
No more than ACORN was. Fair is fair. At least the Church was not telling folks how to commit felonies with government funding.

Since above quote is a reply from the person who started this discussion thread, I can only repeat what I believe is the larger question this type of concern.raises.
Your initial question was dismissed by some as, you using false references (not a real news story)
Now you suggest that we do unto others as they do unto us. This is not the way, the Roman Catholic Church would have us behave, I think.
I admit to feeling the same outrage upon hearing of such ideas even being considered in D.C. by our representatives. As for** Acorn ( a nut filled organization )**🙂
Truth will be known God willing by all the people.
the law is not applied equally unless, we the people want it to be done, and in the fullness of time it is God’s will.

It doesn’t matter if it was “real” or not; I believe it accurately reflects the sentiments of many with regard to lobbying by religions in general and the CC in particular. Why should churches not be permitted redress of grievances [the justification for lobbying]? The abolitionist movement was started by the religious leaders of the time.
Now you suggest that we do unto others as they do unto us. …
WHAT???!!! I don’t know how you got this idea. When I said, “Fair is fair,” I meant that the CC should be treated the same as other entities that lobby. How is that “doing unto others as they do unto us”?
… The question remains is it proper for a church that accepts money from the government to not therefore expect to be also required to follow the rules attached to that money?
I don’t think this is even close to being an accurate description of the situation. You talk as though the money was a gift. It was not. The government has a contract with Catholic adoption agencies, and the money was payment for services rendered according to the terms of that contract. Now the government wants to impose changes to the contract without re-negotiating, and you support that? Gimme a break. The Church does not accept the new terms and is perfectly within its legal rights to refuse to perform those changes and not renew the contract with those changes. BTW, it is also ILLEGAL for the government to demand a contractor to perform things not in the original contract. *
When the Catholic church began to accept money from the government how could the Bishops, Catholics, and others not have foreseen that this would come to pass?
The bishops, et al, did not have to “foresee” anything. The conditions of the contract and the performance period were agreed to, and at that time, the government did not specify that the Church had to serve homosexuals.
The American Roman Catholic church, cannot serve TWO masters.
The Church is obviously not serving two masters. It is refusing to perform services it finds immoral … and illegal.

Nor did he expect us to be a doormat to the planet.*
