Catholic Church officials 'obsessively' hid child sex abuse

Well with a proper Bishop doing his job it shouldn’t be necessary for the prolife movement to do anything other than protect the unborn

I suspect this will never happen again because there are all kinds of safeguards in place that were never used before…
I hope you are right. However, what do you consider the “past” to be? It’s still happening.

It probably will always happen to some extent as long as perverts walk the earth…Remember it is no more frequent in our church than any others

What is different is the way it is handled…A priest is immediately relieved of his parish as soon as any accusations are made

People dealing with chidlren must be finger printed and have background checks

Our sacristy has a window in the door

Also remember not all of the men accused were guilty…and most of this took place decades ago not recently

Really? I object.

All I can say is Satan is having a field day in Ireland, reaping what he sowed. He’s whooping it up now. He’s laughing like hell at us.

The only cure is to get Catholicism back to being very strict like it was as my +grandmother used to point out. This new age modernity has been quite the down fall of the Catholic Church if you ask me.
Let me just point out that this sort of thing is not new.

Our family had connections to the good priest, Fr. Fitzgerald, who founded the Servants of the Paraclete to deal with problem priests. Even prior to WWII, he told my great-aunt of the evil that had befallen the Church, in the guise of pedophile/ephebophile priests. Very interesting story:

So, this is by no means simply a problem of “new age modernity”.

The smoke of satan had entered the church that is for sure…but God will have the last word

You can object all you want…It makes no difference to me
What an ignorant comment to make. I object because your statement is totally false.

If you don’t think making false comments is something that should matter to you, then how do you navigate your CCC??

not arrogant…just not swallowing what you say

Obviously for whatever reasons, there have been many in the priesthood over the years who are or were unfit for the celibate life. A lot of these guys were propably socially backward during the teen years, no girlfriends, maybe even harboring homosexual feelings. The priesthood seemed like a good place to get away from it all especially if the young man came from a religious upbringing. With no acceptable outlet for their sexuality, and no accountability in the system, children became an easy target. It’s really a shame that the good priests out there who have served honorably have taken an image hit because of these sick criminal predators.
An apt description of at least part of the situation, I believe.

Clearly, psychological screening measures were woefully inadequate, and some candidates for the priesthood were adept liars; it has long been my belief that some of the predators became priests especially because of the position of authority, and the access to children that they would achieve.

It’s not the crime that turns opinion against an organization of any kind, it’s the cover up and it’s only made worse because of the age of the victims.

I did not say the word arrogant- I said your comment was Ignorant. As it is totally false.

Put a window and date behind your post number 23. If you want to back up your statements. Until you can, I will object consistantly.

This will not be able to happen again on this scale. The incidents are not current. We would be blind to think that no child will ever again be abused. The Church clergy is still a ripe place for a sex offender to hide. But what we will see now is what has hapened in America where such offenders will stand out more and get caught sooner. We also will see many bishops erring on the side of caution and punish those who are falsely accused just to be on the safe side.

The point I was making is that as Catholics we need to look in the mirror and at the problems within the leadership of our Church. The point I was making is that since we already have advocacy groups organzied, it would make sense if the focus of the Pro Life movement was on rooting out evil within our church and changing the secret atmosphere of the Catholic Church that was the environment that this abuse flourished. We need to regain our credibility.

Try to look at it another way. Imagine if you had a neighbor who was completely disheveled with weeds overflowing in his front yard. Now imagine that neighbor yelling to everyone on his front porch that they need to clean up their homes. Would anyone listen to your neighbor? Probably not. That is what the Pro Life movement looks like with all the scandals going on.

And Pnewton, try not to take things personally. It’s not about you, it’s about saving our Church.
Interestingly, despite the horrors of the clerical abuse scandal, people have, indeed, been listening to those in the Pro-Life movement; a majority of people in this country now describe themselves as pro-life:

An undocumented statement does not make it a false statement. I heard Father Corapi make the same statement about a priest he knows.

It is a false statement, and there is NO documentation for it. There is plently of documentation from your own church that proves it a false statement.

Prove it is false.

One can not prove a negative. Like I said, I know the testimony of one priest I trust that it has happened. You may not believe it, but that does not make it false. If the logic escapes you, then I will just leave this for those that have a grasp of it.

“On this scale”. Oh how I love people who like to use the numbers game again.

Tell me how the recent cases revealed in Chicago were examples of Bishops erring on the side of caution.

I believe logic is escaping you my friend. I am replying to redrosetea’s false statements.

Numbers are data. Data is how we filter through such prejudices like your anticatholicism and arrive at objectivity. I am sorry that you are opposed to them. I am not from Chicago and the article is on Ireland so I have no idea how to bring your “examples” to bear on this topic.

False statement sir. Personal attacks are not allowed on this forum last I checked.

I object to your post and will report it unless you retract.
