If people make the argument that we shouldn’t help Mexicans here illegally because they broke our laws then I think it’s entirely relevant.
Fine non sequtur there…what is irrelevant is a general discussion regarding civil disobedience to unjust laws, when US immigration policy is anything BUT unjust. If the law you want to break is a good law, then talk about the justice of breaking bad laws is utterly irrelevent.

As to ‘help…’ that’s fine. The problem lies in the sort of help given. My opinion is that the best help is that which gets these people legal–in a way that lets them know that the consequences of coming here illegally are such that it’s better to come legally—or to simply not come.

And the problem I see is that these so-called laws seem to focus on Hispanics. What about white people from Europe? I know thre has to be illegal Europeans here, but are overlooked because they are white.
They are overlooked by the folks who want to give illegal Hispanics special status. They are not overlooked by those of us who object to illegal immigration. WE apply our objections to everybody. Claiming that it’s only about Hispanics and that any objection to illegal immigration is racism? That’s the left pulling the race card. It is bogus.

It’s only a non-sequitur if you accept that premise. Obviously many people do not, including the Catholic bishops. As I said before, I’m not sure, but I’m open to the possibility that the policy is restrictive. Otherwise there wouldn’t be an illegal immigration problem.

“Tough love” may or may not be an oxymoron but I maintain it’s not the same as Christian love.

But you have not (and as far as I can tell, neither has anyone else) shown where the laws are unjust. If you are going to claim injustice in the law as a reason to disobey it, it is YOUR job to show where the injustice lies, not mine to prove that it’s a good law.

Yeah, actually, it very much is. “Tough love” is the love you show when you give the help that will solve the problem and get the recipient to a better situation. Simply maintaining people in the same place—especially when it is a very bad place–isn’t love at all.

Tomarin,

I don’t have the article regarding the interview with the head of the American Catholic Bishops. The bishop clarified their actual position vs that interpretated by others with an agenda. I do recall him stating that the illegals are to follow due process of law like all those others, and to go to ‘the back of the bus’, behind those who have entered legally.

In that case we’ve spilt all this internet ink for nothing.

Interesting read
USCCB public policy on immigration doesn’t support open borders, illegal immigration, or an amnesty package that would grant legal status to all unauthorized immigrants. However, it has created a complicated situation for itself, in which many of its allies do support these radical positions – and the Catholic Church is very generous to its allies.
Specifically, to further the work of its immigration campaign, the USCCB has devoted a significant portion of its annual Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) collection to projects that focus on “immigrant rights.”
For instance, in the 2005-2006 funding period, CCHD awarded $20,000 to San Diego’s Justice Overcoming Boundaries. Justice Overcoming Boundaries, the San Diego Catholic Diocese, and the CCHD-funded San Diego Organizing Project were primary organizers of marches in San Diego, seeking laws that would offer undocumented immigrants legal standing in the U.S.

Oh really? Where has any other ethnic group or race been mentioned as much as Hispanics on the current issue? And claiming that is not ONLY about Hispanics and denial of any racism towards one specific ethinic group is the right pulling the smoke screen card! Give me a break!

Tomarin,

Post 85…but by then I had misplaced the paper with the follow-up…

Actually, I find it very hard to discuss Illegal immigration without referring to race. 😦

Who’s fault is that?

The Church has used it by siding with a particular selected part of the population.😦
The Mexicans use it to call me racist…😦

Take a really good look at the rhetoric, Nicea.

WHO is it that is singling out the Hispanics to the exclusion of all, and accusing the other side of racism?

Which side is it, that in defense of their own position, insists that the laws must apply to all illegal aliens?

…and finally, why is it that one side CAN single out Hispanics in this issue? Could it be because the VAST majority, and I do mean the vast majority, of illegal aliens ARE Hispanic?

Whose fault is that? Is it the fault of those of us who want the law enforced for all…or the fault of those who break it?

I think it high time people call bull to the racists…I saw demonstrations today and they are radical Marxists…flag of Che Guevara flying along with the flag of Mexico in front of the government building…

People have to say the truth…there is Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela…why aren’t they immigrating there?

I am going to have to disconnect from this thread…and pray for peace.

What the Church says.
Here is what the Catechism of the Catholic Church has to say:
2241 The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the protection of those who receive him.
Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of the right to immigrate **subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants’ duties toward their country of adoption. **Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens.

And thanks, Kimmie, for your last post…that is balanced and reflects the dignity of all people.

Who’s fault is that? I do not know, you tell me? Ah no! Apparently you do not understand the RCC position, race has NOTHING to do with the matter! Race is label founded by humanity and exist among humanity, not in the eyes of God and the RCC is on the side of God,not labels.

Exactly! Listen carefully to your own words:

Could it be because the VAST majority, and I do mean the vast majority, of illegal aliens ARE Hispanic?

And are ALL illegals Hispanics? Why focus simply on them?

I am back…had to take a break to pray.

The fact that the illegals are Hispanic reflects the political conditions south of our border. There are many people being motivated to come here by various forces and reasons.

But here is the other issue…

And the other sign is that across the country, people are not choosing right or left, conservative or liberal, they are deeply scared.

My uncle worked in intelligence. My father worked for a major aviation company. They talked, but my uncle only so much. After he died, we found out he went incognito into Nazi and Communist lines. He worked back home as an encryptologist deciphering Russian and Chinese intelligence.

It is in the blood.
