Sister Marianne Cope left Syracuse, New York to go to Hawaii with six other Franciscan sisters she led, where she cared for leprosy patients herocially, the only religious leader in the U.S. or Europe who agreed to go then. Those who cared for leprosy patients could catch leprosy themselves, which was an incurable disease then. She is being canonized in Rome this coming Sunday, two miracles having occurred through her intercession after she died.

Bless you for posting this summary. What a shame the celebration can’t take place in the US. How desperately we need to focus more on celebrating our saints instead of just our entertainers.
