When the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger became pope on April 8, 2005, many Catholics felt he might soften his reputation as a hard-line “enforcer of the faith.” Yet his tenure has shown few signs of mellowing.

hmm… that is not how I remember it. I recall that there was great apprehension (or anticipation) that “God’s Rottweiler” was going to come down hard on various individuals, groups, or ideas which were less than strictly orthodox. And that Pope Benedict surprised everyone by reaching by being pastoral and conciliatory rather than confrontational.

Granted there have been three stories this month which the mainstream media has spun in an unflattering way. But this hardly means that Pope Benedict is “leading a counterreformation.”

Benedict XVI is a complicated Pope, he does not fit very well into any sound bytes. He has made pushes towards some older ways, but he has also consulted with more modern-idea theologians early in his papacy. It remains to be seen if that meeting will lead to a shift somewhere in that direction in the future.

The RCC has usually moved in generations to centuries on some things anyways. I view him as a mixed bag for all sides of the RCC overall.

The article did give a good followup-reference in the “Instruction Concerning Certain Aspects of the ‘Theology of Liberation,’” mention. I found that on the Vatican’s website and it will take some time to go through all of it.

Only time will tell with what is coming next out of BXVI as he is a complicated person.
