Catholic colleges must combat secularism, says cardinal in Boston

In a speech, Cardinal Burke insists that at Catholic colleges the primary instructor should be Jesus Christ. But secularism has invaded some Catholic colleges, a secularism that denies the dignity of human life, the integrity of marriage and right human relationships. Now more than ever that Church need colleges that properly form students in the faith, he also said. Catholic colleges should nurture the soul of the nation.

The problem begins long before a student attends a Catholic college or university. It begins in the home where parents must teach the Catholic faith to their children and it also must be taught in Catholic elementary schools. But it’s up to our Church leaders to make Catholic education a priority. Too many priests and bishops see Catholic schools as a financial burden instead of the future of our Church. Children who attend public elementary schools encounter secularism long before college.

I can’t argue with that. There is not the support of Catholic Schools that there was once. I think it is a responsibility for all Cathloics to support Catholic schools, even if their child is not currently in one.

I was taught how to be a traditional Catholic at home, however, by the time I started non-Catholic college in the 1970s, I was not prepared for the more hedonistic atmosphere I would find there. This would even spread to some degree to Catholic universities. It didn’t happen overnight. It started in 1967.

Compared to the 1960s, Catholic kids growing up today are being exposed to far more perversion and dysfunctional behavior being marketed as OK and even fun.

Well said. Barring mass firings of progressive faculty and staff, I don’t see the Catholic Church turning this particular ship around. And I don’t think the Church hierarchy has the courage to do such a thing anymore.

As the Catholic Church in the West undergoes a wave of secularism, it must be understood that God guides His Church. As history shows, like the Israelites, God continues to love His people.
