Something simple like, “Before you convert I would like to discuss it with you”. You are just looking to break the ice at this point to get a discussion going. (I guess from your post)

The only problem is with the forum site I showed you.

I am not allowed to say ANYTHING against the jw religion

I am not allowed to do any form of evangelising.

And I am not allowed to post links leading to websites that are against the jw religion.

I have however posted on that thread telling him to come to www.catholic.com I just hope the admins won’t delete me over that 😦

If he reports you that is ok. The point is you did not let a sheep just wander off without making some effort to get him back.

Oh that place, I have looked around in there. Its tightly guarded, you cant get much word in, just goes to show how much mind control is going on those poor JWs.
Zero free thought and no open channels.

Look at this sickening advice they are feeding him, they know he wants to be a JW but his parents are against it.

from the looks of it he has all their main books already and is eager for more.

Yeah i know Catholic Dude isn’t that sad?

Is he very well educated in the Catholic faith? I just can’t imagine an informed Catholic going over to something so foolish as the JW’s. Where I live, the JW’s get most of their converts from the poor and illiterate.

I am touched by this, and the other times I have seen it. There was a time a few years ago and maybe one time before I really felt like converting, you know tired afraid etc. The people in my faith communities pretty much told me this. Go ahead no real loss. To have someone actually care enough to want to discuss faith and hold on to a “brother” is amazing. In the real world I have never experienced that. I hope you can help him.

It didn’t take very long for me to get banned from the site! 😦 Ohhhh well…

I have a classmate from HS who converted… I never really discussed it with him as we were only marginally knew each other, and I’ve only seen him a couple of times in 25 years…

I guess you have to be really disillusioned with our faith to go that route.

I also had a coworker who still is a JW, we used to have a few discussions on what we believed. I guess we didn’t get down to many details as I never really got a very good understanding of what they objected to or what they were for.

Both of these folks were pretty decent people and I don’t doubt their sincerity but I never really saw why they accepted the JW philosophy.

I’ve never been witnessed to but I would be curious as to how they would attack our faith and what arguments they would use to defend theirs… I would also like to someday have a discussion with a mormon, not that I have a lot of time to waste or that I would be open to their beliefs, but I am interested in what they think about our beliefs, and how they can justify some of theirs.

I have found that the Jehovah’s Witnesses present themselves very well. Have you ever seen their Watchtower and Awake publications? Genius! Really nice artwork, depicting people of all races and backgrounds, smiling and very devoted to their faith. They also put a lot of emphasis on the resurrection in the end time, depicting it once again with their very beautiful artwork by showing happy families being reunited with dead loved ones in a beautiful paradise. Now who could not want that? Don’t we all want to be a part of that?

I can see how such things attract people to them. Yes, one can say that it is manipulative, but again, can you blame people for wanting such things? That is something that we Catholics fall way short on. We never talk enough about how the world will be some day when Jesus returns again to restore his eternal kingdom. Jehovah’s Witnesses emphasize very strongly the concept of hope of a better future, while we Catholics don’t seem to do so enough.

So I can see how and why someone would convert to the JW’s. They are masters at appealing to our very basic instincts and needs.

“They are masters at appealing to our very basic instincts and needs.”

Hi:

Yes, they are masters at appealing to our baser instincts and needs but not to our spiritual needs.

What does it really mean to be in the presence of God for all eternity? In a certain sense, we really have no idea what it will be like except that it will be wonderful much more wonderful than living in paradise on earth. ( My mother once told me when she converted to the JWs that the hardest thing she had to give up when becoming a JW was the hope of seeing Jesus face to face.)

We may not have much of an idea of what it will be like to live forever with the Lord, but, we all know what a nice house looks like…what a nice yard looks like, what a nice woman or man looks like…

The JWs’ hope is very materialistic. In fact, when the JWs go from door to door particularly in a wealthy neighborhoods they often pick out which of the houses they want God to give them in the paradise once God murders the current occupants for not becoming JWs themselves.

In the Catholic Church, we are given much more than the hope of living forever in a beautiful house, with beautiful people, with a beautiful yard.

We are given the hope of actually being immersed in God’s presence for all eternity! We experience a foretaste of this in the Mass…

Having been offered the hope of the JWs and the hope of being immersed in the life of the Trinity for all eternity…I can tell you right now…I would never want the Catholic Church to become anything like the JWs…Because the JWs want you to choose to receive infinitely less than the Lord wishes to give us! The Catholic Church, however, gives us the Graces we need to receive ALL that the Lord wishes to give us, if only we would say Yes to Him more often!

From the article,** “Helping Jehovah’s Witnesses Get the Picture”** by** Mary Kochan** on Catholic Exchange:

“…To entice you into accepting their offer of a “free home Bible study”, they will show you brightly colored pictures of idyllic garden scenes, beautiful lakeside homes and children romping with lions. …”

I can only say and perhaps you can elaborate. To my understanding anyone (ie Catholics) who converts to sects or cults (to properly call them) is because of lack of faith. They are the ones who are after sensationalising interpretations of the Bible verses to their own liking. The New Testament clearly warns us of these kinds of empty teachings. On the other hand Jesus at many times teaches us the importance of faith. Recall how he compares it to a mustard seed. I honestly think that all those who’ve left the church had the slightest iota of faith. It goes to show how exciting and appealing stories easily attract the faithless
