My wife and I have been married for a little more than 2 years. I love her more than anything and I hate having to post the following concern. I was raised Catholic and she was raised Episcopalian…I knew that going in…we dated several years prior to marriage. I drifted away from the church during collage and after meeting my wife I started going to her church. I really like her family’s church, and still do, (we were married in it) but my family is starting to bug me about going back to the Catholic church. I have semi considered it…my folks are pretty upset that I left, but my wife says that its not appropriate for spouses to have two separate churches, especially considering the fact that we want to start trying for children soon. She is absolutely against converting to Catholicism…my parents are horrified about a child of “their line” not being Catholic…it is all a huge mess. I’m stressed because we don’t even have children yet but my parents are already making plans for them in the Catholic tradition. Her parents are very easy going…they will accept anything as long as they can spoil the babies to no end. I don’t want to force anything on my wife especially something that I have not been so devout in following. I really need some wise words…🤷

Your post touched me. I’m sorry that you’re in such a tough spot.

Do you believe in the teachings of the Catholic Church? If you do and yet you deny the Church, aren’t you concerned about your salvation? Your answer may be that you’re willing to put the matter of your salvation aside for the sake of your family. I would understand that answer even though I disagree with it. But what of the salvation of your children, should you be lucky enough to have them? If you believe that the Catholic Church is the Church established by Christ, could you allow your children to be kept away from her?

Like I said, I’m sorry you’re in such a tough spot.

Every morning I ask St. Joseph to be an example for me of how to be a Christian husband and father for my family. I’ll start asking him to help you out, too.

Thank you for your response. To be honest I don’t know what I believe…I know that sounds horrible. I personally do not find anything wrong with raising our future children in my wife’s church. Like I said previously I do like the church but I’m starting to feel confused…and every time that I bring it up with my wife…well we don’t try to have babies for about a week…get the picture? We both want to have happy well adjusted babies with a good Christian faith but I’m feeling so conflicted which is odd because I did not feel this way until we started trying. I can’t talk to my folks because they don’t understand the love and respect that I have for my wife…they would tell me to that I’m the man of the house therefore I make the rules…Well I don’t agree… I can’t even begin to explain what a loving woman she is…I would do anything to prevent conflict between us. I know I sound pathetic and I’m sorry. I never expected this to be an issue…or at least not so soon.

Well, hopefully this won’t sound as harsh as it’s going to sound. The Episcopalians have run off the rails and are not a place to allow this to happen.

Pray that God will send His Holy Spirit to guide you.

Dan.
First off you are going to have to calm down.
Do you think your wife might not have married you if she knew you might one day revert to Catholicism?
Forget about your folkes. This is about you, your way… and your family. You are an adult. You only need to tell them once to back off and leave you and your family alone in these matters, and then they will understand it and your wife might respect you even more too 😉 You are one with your wife now. And your communication must improve.
How about looking into Catholcism in a calm and reflected way? Not talking about it all the time or showing that you are out of peace. How about renting some Catholic movies… like “Karol - a man who became Pope” (its COOL) and some awesome books about Catholic testimonies like Roy Shoeman’s “Honey from the Rock”. or something other… I can give you plenty of good titles if you like to read… If you like apologetics then I can warmly recommend “By what Authority?” written by a layman Mark Shea…

At any rate… God is not a God of confusion and unease. What matters to Him is Love and that you follow Him.

Peace to you brother… and congratulations on your wonderful marriage. How blessed you are … 🙂

Well, I suggest you read and study your own faith. **Don’t be led into a new faith out of ignorance because you are “comfortable” there. ** I suggest you actually study what the Episcopal church teaches. You will find it to be significantly different that the Catholic Church’s teachings (which you also seem to be ignorant of).

I was raised Episcopalian and was very ignorant of what that church *actually *taught until I began studying as an adult. It seemed like it was sorta Catholic-- looked like Catholic, used a lot of the same terms/rituals, etc. BUT, it’s not Catholic. I discovered major doctrinal and moral differences. I am now a Catholic.
and every time that I bring it up with my wife…well we don’t try to have babies for about a week…get the picture?
Only married a short time and your wife is using sex as a weapon. NOT a good sign. Not a mature way of communicating. Something you need to think seriously about.
We both want to have happy well adjusted babies with a good Christian faith but I’m feeling so conflicted which is odd because I did not feel this way until we started trying.
Yes, many people come to realize what they have lost by rejecting their faith only after they have gotten themselves into a marriage with a non-Catholic and are contemplating children. It’s common, and it’s very unfortunate.

You, as a Catholic, have an obligation to raise your children Catholic. But, you don’t really seem to fully grasp what it is you are considering walking away from. You need to read, study, and educate yourself as an adult Catholic.

You are still a Catholic, albeit one who has separated himself from the Sacraments. You are also in an invalid marriage as far as the Catholic Church is concerned-- if you did not go through Catholic marital preparation and receive a dispensation from Catholic form to be married in your wife’s church.
I can’t talk to my folks because they don’t understand the love and respect that I have for my wife…they would tell me to that I’m the man of the house therefore I make the rules…Well I don’t agree… I can’t even begin to explain what a loving woman she is…
I am sorry your parents cannot discuss this rationally. Of course they are upset. They are concerned about you and your future children.

You should not return to the Catholic Church because of parental pressure. You should resume the practice of your Catholic faith because it’s the Truth.
I would do anything to prevent conflict between us.
You should think twice about this statement. Does “anything” include the condemnation of your soul? You really want to separate yourself from the Church, the Bride of Christ?

There are many Christian witnesses who went to their death rather than deny Christ and his Church. And, you would give that up for a lesser cause?
I know I sound pathetic and I’m sorry. I never expected this to be an issue…or at least not so soon.
The one thing I can tell you is that you need to figure things out BEFORE you have children. You do not want them to be in a tug of war over religion.

Start by both of you studying the teachings, origins, and beliefs of your two religions. Be adult about this. It’s a search for the Truth-- not a competition or a control issue.

And, the bedroom nonsense she is pulling needs to stop. It’s manipulative and childish.

I wanted to quote this to emphasize this. I really REALLY like these questions and 1ke makes great points.

While I am not in the same position as the original poster, I just wanted to say that I have had to tell someone very close to me that there are things I can no longer participate in. I HAVE to choose God first. Above all else. I have come back to the Catholic church and my life is no longer flat. It is full, rich, and fulfilled. This is very important. I’d rather give up other human beings if it means that I lose site of God. This is only a recent decision on my part and it is active participation by me every single day.

Think about it.

I suggest you actually study what the Episcopal church teaches.
I’m gonna agree with 1ke on this point. Please spend a few hours reading and contemplating the Episcopal Church’s Catechism (found at the back of the Book of Common Prayer). IMHO, you should discuss this with your pastor at the Episcopal Church, and with a Catholic priest in your area.

Seems like it’s really hard when one partner converts/reverts and the other doesn’t. My wife is Catholic, but we were married in the Catholic Church and I had a pretty good idea of what to expect.

I agree with this advice. You need to know the truth, both, as mature individuals who look forward to spending a lifetime of peace and harmony with family on both sides of the fence and as responsible Christians who will be raising up children. As you are divided and confused now, so will they be throughout their lives. As you study your respective religions, keep an open mind but listen with the heart. History is favorable on the side of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church whose rich heritage delivered up true martyrs and saints, whose faith do not compromise reality with false sense of security in the name of freedom and peace, and whose believers understand and respect Authority, not for its sake but for love of its founder, Jesus, our Lord and Savior. There can’t be a divided Church as there can’t be a divided marriage.

And, the bedroom nonsense she is pulling needs to stop. It’s manipulative and childish.

You need to start studying the Catholic Faith and make a good effort to understand what you are giving up. Then you need to decide if you truly want to walk away from the Church. Then if you do decide that you need to do it by a formal act and make it clear to your parents that this is the case and your children will not be Catholic. You don’t say if you got a dispensation to marry in the Episcopal church, did you ? If not you are in an invalid marriage anyway .This means that you have separated yourself from the church in some degree but not officially. You need to write to the Bishop to do that. I would never encourage anyone to leave the Catholic Church. I believe it to be the Church that Christ has founded . However , you are being wishy washy and standing behind your wife on this issue. Time to be a man. Find out the information that you need and make a man’s decision. The man is the spiritual leader of the marriage so step up. Hope this isn’t coming out harshly , I don’t mean it too. Your wife using sex as a weapon is truly troubling. However, her understanding that you have to get on the same page as far as parenting and religion are concerned is right on. So get educated and make sure you understand what you would be denying your future children before you make the decision for them to not be Catholic.

Prayers for you and your marriage.

No she is not using sex as a weapon…I meant to say that we get so stressed and upset and who want do “do it” when your mad…

I am very gracious for everybody’s replies, which I am still reading, I got the idea from some posts, suggesting that my wife and I are really young…we are, but she is in her late 20’s and I am in my early 30’s…in other words we’re not chicks off the farm!

Sorry I did not quote right…anyways…when I mentioned that we don’t have sex for a week its not just because of her…I said that if we discuss religion and discuss my folks then we BOTH don’t feel like it for a while. My folks convinced/badgered her into speaking with their priest tomorrow. She is so great for going but I feel so bad knowing that its against her will.

If she was badgered and convinced to it, then I feel really sorry for her. I feel sorry for her because you are not standing up for her. I am not saying leave behind being a Catholic but she is what she is also and obviously you knew that before you went in. I find it sad though that your parents are ruling what she and you do. Time to be stand up for your wife and be the head of the house, as these people here have put it. It is funny now they want you to be a man when it comes to things having to do with Catholisicim but if it were the other way around, it would be stand up and be the woman! Don’t listen to him/your husband. Two standards that are lived up to on this site. I see nothing wrong with her seeing a priest, but if I were her and you weren’t going to do it, I would tell your parents to leave me alone and if they couldn’t come around without talking about being a Catholic then to stay away from me. I am sorry if I have offended you with what I write, but it really errks me on this site that people just dish out divorce/leave or live as brother/sister or you are not married, your marriage is worthless because you didn’t get married in the “true church” and yada yada yada. I don’t believe for one minute this is what God wants and yes you need to seek out the truth as an adult. I will even agree with them on this one. Sounds like a good idea to me. I have been coming here for over a year and I can tell you if this is the truth, I am being pushed very very far away from it with each post. I know people, let me guess, I cannot handle the truth and oh yeah don’t let me forget to add how ignorant (as one likes to use this word alot) I am also!! Good luck. I do suggest you see a counselor. One that does not push either side, before you find your wife not being pushed to a priest but to a divorce lawyer. I think you are wanting the right intentions for your wife though, I really do, just don’t forget her in the process.

dan428…I wanted to reaffirm with you that my last post was not to be so hard on you. It is just I feel that sometimes most of the people here can be too hard on the posters, when the truth of what they believe is fine, but just use a little more consideration of someones feelings. I hope you do find the peace you are looking for.

BTW, as far as these people thinking that your wife is “holding out sex” with you. Well first of all, WE ALL have done it as women, she is not childish, she is being a women. So don’t listen to anybody that comes on here badgering your wife about this because if they act like they are wifey of the year haven’t done this, they are a LIAR or they are not married!

Again good luck to you. I think my blood pressure is finally coming down after this post. I think this is a sign that another break is needed from these forums again. I have to do that quit often or else I get myself in an uproar, which then starts affecting my home, which I then feel like is a sin to get this angry and take it out on my husband (which by the way is Catholic). But yes this is a childish act, I see it, but also am smart enough to know when to leave this place for a while. God Bless You!

You sound a little bit like my husband! He has a more laid back personality than me and in the beginning of our marriage I dominated a lot of the decision making. I was Presbyterian and he was a nominal Catholic. He didn’t really know what he had in the Catholic church, so he went along with me and we were married in the Presbyterian church and that is where we attended for the first few years. He loved me (still does!) and wanted to make me happy. He did have the sense that he was missing something and anytime he would bring up the Catholic church, we would have big fights. I was very anti-Catholic. Well, fast forward to now and I have been a convert for three years. We had our marriage validated and we are a very happy Catholic family raising four boys.

Here is my advice: You need to find out what you believe first. Study both churches. Pray for yourself and your wife that you would both find the truth. If you come back to the Catholic church and she doesn’t, you will need to attend mass, but perhaps you can go to mass yourself and church with her. Continue to pray for her. You need to tell your parents to back off. This is very important. This is between you and your wife. You need to stand up for her. As far as the sex thing, I understand. It is not that she is manipulating you, it is that you are fighting over this and aren’t feeling that friendly for a little while! You are fighting over religion and parents. That is not a pretty combo!

I am sorry that you are going through this, I know it must be extremely difficult. When we were married, my husband was Episcopalian. He had not been attending the church for some time and had started getting upset about how the church was becoming liberal on issues like abortion. We were married in the Catholic church which he was fine with but did have the pastor from his church there also as he had a big part in his family’s long time connection with him. This pastor had helped them through losing my father in law at a young age.

Dan would go to Mass with me occasionally and then after several months started attending with me and that continued until several years later when our daughter was getting close to receiving First Communion and some disscussions we had that he converted to the Catholic church. In that time frame his old church was becoming more and more liberal and he has always been conservative.

I can understand why your family is upset, I pray that this will all work out well for your family.

Now this is a true Christ like loving answer. I love what you have to say. Respect on both sides. Thanks for speaking what you believe with such respect. As I have told a few select people on here before, you are someone that I would sit down with and actually listen to what you have to say.

Thank you all. My wife met with my parent’s priest today, but unfortunatley she was surprised by my mom being their as well. The priest of course asked my mom to leave, but my wife said that she still felt like she was “tackeled” by my mom…who wanted to make sure she would show up. The priest spoke with her for about 2 hours and gave her some literature…he asked if she would be willing to come back next week and she said yes. She is still upset…I feel like a bad husband…I should tell my parents to back off and leave us be, but I don’t want to burn bridges. At least now we can honestly say that she has spoken with the priest and if she likes what she has to hear or not is none of my folks concern.

I meant to add the following…some people mentioned putting the church and God first…well my wife and I are good christians and I feel that we do the best we can to live a good christian life. In some of the posts it almost seemed as though people were suggesting that I should discard my feelings for my wife and our marriage in favor for the catholic church. I hope that was not the point people were trying to make, because I would follow my wife to hell and back…we made vows and those vows are worth more than anything to me.
