Have you ever met any Catholic fanatics?

I know of one. He’s actually orthodox, but sometimes he amuses me with his posts. He recently said to a Protestant who didn’t believe in the Eucharist,

"You are under the bondage of SATANIC Pentecostal cults!"

:rotfl:

Well, I have heard Protestants make such statements to Catholics but never heard it the other way round!

Oh, yeah. My home parish is full of them. Miss Nell, Miss Agnes, Miss Julia, and the list goes on.

A few years ago, we had that dreadful “St. Jude Novena” going around (the one that promises that if you pray for a million dollars (or any other impossible wish) every day for nine days, and make 9 copies of the novena each day and litter your parish church with them, then you will receive your impossible wish. This has never happened, of course, but that doesn’t stop people from hoping) - our Pastor put his foot down and after a weekday Mass one time, he told the people that the next person caught littering the Church with these stupid things would be charged with trespassing and littering. So Miss Nell pipes up, “But Father! We were praying it for your conversion!” 😛

Yeah, I’ve run into a few of those holier than the pope types, too. They always know who is righteous and who isn’t, but they never seem to tumble to the fact that by making that judgment they are acting the Pharisee. It’s a real pitfall for those trying to live a virtuous life. They try, but they aren’t succeeding because they are so busy running around picking at others they can’t see their own faults. Our main concern ought to be our own transformation from sinner to saint, not deciding who is a sinner, who is a saint.

I read a blog whose author said of his uncle: “He thinks Heaven’s population will consist of him, the Virgin Mary, and God, and he’s not so sure about God.”

It can certainly be problematic when an otherwise orthodox Catholic tries to impose his/her own spirituality or personal preferences or pious practices, etc. on others. It’s the “I’m more Catholic than the Pope” syndrome! 😦

That’s not far from the truth if this exorcism has anything to say.

Have you ever been to a Pentecostal service?

I’ve been to hard-core Pentacostal services several times, and have found them to be deeply disturbing. I don’t find your acquaintance’s characterization to be laughable.

If you listened to such “fanatics” you might learn that probably most or all of them know a great deal about Church teachings and history.

The Catholic Church teaches, of course, that it and it alone is the “one, true faith”. Protestant sects that have by definition separated themselves from the Church that Christ founded have some elements of truth mixed with - in all cases - error. That is, falsehood. All falsehood comes from the father of falsehood.

That is not, of course, to say that Protestants are “bad” or anything like that. But you might want to think about the core teachings of your Church and what they actually mean. It wasn’t God that caused the Protestant Revolution.

Furthermore, many orthodox Catholics would be of the opinion that what goes on at Pentecostal services is, in some, many, or most cases, demonic phenomena. Have you read any of the statements from mystics and saints who have remarked on satan’s cleverness and ability to fool with sensationalism?

There are different groups and sub-groups within the category of ‘Charismatic’. There was one near Pittsburgh we attended years ago a couple of times to hear a guest speaker. They were very mild (one would have thought it was a Baptist church) and not hostile to Catholics at all.
Now more extreme sects are indeed creepy. In the nineties ‘holy laughter’ was all the rage. ‘Slaying in the spirit’ is still very popular even today. They have to keep topping themselves so people will keep coming back.
I remember one story about a lady who got ‘slain in the spirit’ one Sunday. She came back the following Sunday to recieve the ‘spirit’ again. The preacher said “you just recieved the Holy Spirit last week” The woman shook her head sadly and replied “I leak”.
😃

The picture in my mind of a Catholic (or Protestant) fanatic is one that is so heavenly-minded that he or she is of no earthly good. If you will note, the Saints , who were very heavenly minded, had their feet firmly planted on this earth.

I once worked the night shift with a woman, a nurses’ aide, (and a Protestant) who was so into the Bible that she brought it to work and read it on the job, neglecting her duties. I would find vital signs not taken and tasks not done because of her incessant Bible reading. This is the type of thing I am talking about, and it can be either Catholic or non-Catholic people that are guilty of this. I’ve met both.

Some of the worst employees I have ever worked with have been ‘born-again’ Christians. Not saying that is across the board, but it has been my experience.

Sensationalism! Oh ya! Although I have never read any writings of saints and mystics on this topic, I know what you mean. I am a Catholic Charismatic myself, but I know perfectly well the difference between being filled with the Holy Spirit and sensationalism.

I was watching GodTV once and I happened to see a Protestant service. And I could clearly discern that something was wrong. The music that they were playing was wierd - something that manipulates the brain. The lyrics were not praising God. The song was something like “I want to know what’s gonna happen…”. But when I saw it, I knew it was not the Holy Spirit that was moving in that place. People in the front row were acting wierd, shaking their heads and bodies as though in ecstasy. I watched it for sometime and then changed the channel coz I felt it was demonic.

I thought this thread would be about people that love the Catholic Church like fanatics or like baseball fanatics love baseball. But instead it’s about misguided people that don’t understand Catholicsm. 😦

It is true that Pentecostals are not Christian according to the Catholic view since they baptize in the “Name of Jesus” and NOT in the “Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit”. Since they are not Christian then God did not author their faith and if God didn’t, then it is reasonable to assume that Satan did.

Have you ever been to a Pentacostal Church before? To one of their “Revivals”?

I did. This was my experience. I truly did experience being in the mist of seemingly demonically possessed/oppressed people - it was a horrifying experience. I wanted to leave immediately, but I did stay and witness the entire thing. It did not get better. The “spirit” (definitely not of God) was causing children to violently convulse - some while standing and some were thrown to the ground. Some women were on their knees with their eyes rolled back into their heads so you could only see the whites of their eyes while they screamed in an unknown language (no interpreters, so we know they were not speaking in tongues the way it’s described in the Bible). It was completely insane. There was NO Holy Spirit there, there was NO peace of God…I was left with the feeling that I’d just witnessed a bit of Hell, I left feeling like I just immerged from pure evil. Spiritually dirty.

Those are ‘United Pentecostals’. They are a sub-sect of Pentecostalism, considered heretics by ‘Full Gospel’ and Assembly of God’ churches.

It should also be noted that the founder of Pentecostalism, Charles F. Parham, was a racist, becoming a full ledged member of the KKK by 1910.

This reminds me of a “fool-Saint”. Such people, I believe, are saintly in some way, yet it does no good to anyone, it just seems to bring trouble to themselves and those around them. I first heard of the idea in the novel Fifth Business, but it is quite an interesting concept, more common in Eastern Christianity I believe.

I think that is what JustAServant is saying my friend. It can be VERY weird.
